Tyler Hardman and Jonathan Ornelas each had two hits and Brendan Beck struck out nine in six innings as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders opened the final series of the first half with a 3-1 win over the Columbus Clippers on Tuesday night at Huntington Park in Ohio.

It may have been a costly injury, however, as New York Yankees No. 1 prospect George Lombard Jr. left the game with an apparent left arm injury.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Columbus’ Bo Naylor attempted to steal second. The throw from RailRiders catcher Austin Wells — who was playing the first game of a MLB rehab assignment — was to the first-base side of the bag. Lombard went to field the throw and appeared to jam his hand into the sliding Naylor. He grabbed his wrist and hopped in pain. After a brief delay, he stayed in the game, but came out in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Naylor was on base after singling to score Cooper Ingle, who led off the inning with a double, and give the Clippers a 1-0 lead.

That is all Columbus would muster against Beck (6-2), who allowed three hits and did not walk a batter. His strikeouts matched his career-high for the third time this season; he also had nine in the opener March 27 at Buffalo and May 13 against Syracuse. Bradley Hanner worked a scoreless seventh with one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Yovanny Cruz pitched the final two innings scoreless with one walk and two strikeouts to earn his second save.

Hardman started the top of the seventh for the RailRiders (35-34) with a single. One out later, Ornelas doubled to put runners at second and third. Columbus brought the infield in and Duke Ellis hit a ground ball to second. Juan Brito’s throw home struck Hardman in the side of the head for an error, allowing him to score the tying run, Ornelas to go to third and Ellis reach on a fielder’s choice. Kenedy Corona followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Ornelas and give the RailRiders a 2-1 lead.

Ornelas provided an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Hardman led off with a single, Ernesto Martinez Jr. was hit by a pitch and Ornelas singled to score Hardman.

Wells went 0 for 3 with a walk in seven innings in his first game of his rehab assignment. He was placed on the Yankees’ 10-day injured list June 6 with cervical headaches.

Clippers starting pitcher Austin Peterson fanned 12 in 5.2 innings.

On Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., the series continues. Righthander Alexander Cornielle makes his RailRiders debut against Columbus righty Pedro Avila (2-6, 7.08).

Tyler Hardman and Jonathan Ornelas each had two hits and Brendan Beck struck out nine in six innings…

[15
51447,178,180,179,726
post-221267","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-scranton","tag-rail-riders","tag-scranton","tag-scranton-headlines","tag-scranton-news","tag-sports
["GET
