The suspect in a fatal shooting Tuesday inside Wilmington Hospital has been taken into custody in Philadelphia, officials said.<\/p>\n
The 23-year-old man is expected to be charged in the shooting and extradited to Delaware, the city of Wilmington said in a statement. There were no details about his capture.<\/p>\n
Officials have declined to release information about the identities of the victims or the condition of a person who was shot and survived. The city said the shooting is believed to have been targeted and isolated.<\/p>\n
ChristianaCare, which operates the hospital, said in an emailed statement it had diverted patients from its emergency department and was \u201ctaking all appropriate steps to ensure the safety of our patients, caregivers and visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n
A lockdown at the hospital had been lifted by Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
At the news conference, Wilmington Mayor John Carney acknowledged the victims and hospital workers who hid as law enforcement went from room to room, clearing the building.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf ever there is a place that should be a sanctuary for such violence, that is the place,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n
Kristen Lackford was recovering from feeding tube surgery when her hospital room door was suddenly kicked open by law enforcement with large guns and helmets, she said.<\/p>\n
Lackford said it was scary watching the team search under her bed and in her bathroom before marking her door with a large letter \u201cC\u201d and never explaining why they were there.<\/p>\n
When she finally learned what had happened and that the shooter could still be in the building, Lackford said she felt like \u201ca sitting duck.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was absolutely nothing that I could do to make myself feel safe,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
About 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, Delaware County officers were told via radio that Wilmington police were attempting to locate a possible suspect from the shooting. It was a white Toyota RAV 4 traveling east on Route 291 at Route 420 about 20 minutes earlier. The vehicle had passed a plate reader.<\/p>\n
It was unclear Wednesday morning whether that was the suspect\u2019s vehicle.<\/p>\n
