Recent severe storms led to a swimming restriction at Beach 6 on Tuesday after elevated levels of E. coli were detected in the water. As of Wednesday, the restriction was lifted, but water quality levels continue to change.<\/p>\n
Officials with the Regional Science Consortium conduct daily water quality testing throughout the summer to determine whether conditions are safe for swimmers. When E. coli levels exceed established safety thresholds, beach advisories or restrictions are issued to protect public health.<\/p>\n
“We are looking at water quality all the time during those hundred days of summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day,” said Dr. Jeanette Schnars, executive director of the Regional Science Consortium. “At the restriction level, we do have the red flags out, which means humans are not advised to go in the water. They can still come to the beach, so the beach is not closed.”<\/p>\n
Beach conditions are communicated through a flag system. A yellow flag advisory warns that young children and individuals with compromised immune systems should avoid entering the water. A red flag restriction indicates E. coli levels are high enough that swimming is not recommended.<\/p>\n
Sean Dalton, the Regional Science Consortium’s lab and field manager, said Tuesday’s test results far exceeded the threshold for a red flag restriction.<\/p>\n
“Essentially, what we do is collect water, and the government has all of the thresholds for yellow flag or red flag,” Dalton said. “For today, we had an E. coli value of 1,732, which is quite well above that 999 level for the red flag.”<\/p>\n
While E. coli is commonly associated with waste contamination, officials say the bacteria found at Presque Isle typically comes from natural environmental sources rather than human sewage.<\/p>\n
“Here at Presque Isle, we really do not see impacts from human waste,” Schnars said.<\/p>\n
“Just because the levels are high doesn’t mean there’s raw sewage in the water or anything like that,” Dalton added.<\/p>\n
The Regional Science Consortium will continue daily testing throughout the summer. Officials encourage visitors to check beach conditions and watch for yellow and red flags before heading into the water.<\/p>\n
