{"id":222498,"date":"2026-06-18T18:33:07","date_gmt":"2026-06-18T18:33:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/222498\/"},"modified":"2026-06-18T18:33:07","modified_gmt":"2026-06-18T18:33:07","slug":"trump-wins-appeal-over-philly-slavery-exhibit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/222498\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump wins appeal over Philly slavery exhibit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>A federal appeals court has paved the way for the Trump administration to <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/presidents-house-site-philadelphia-new-panels\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">replace the slavery exhibit<\/a> it removed at the President\u2019s House Site on Philadelphia\u2019s Independence Mall.\n<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s decision effectively discards a <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/philadelphia-presidents-house-slavery-exhibit-judge-orders-immediate-restoration\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">February injunction<\/a> ordering the National Park Service to restore the site, which included a series of illustrated panels about the nine people enslaved by George Washington at the executive mansion while he was president in the 1790s.\n<\/p>\n<p>The panels were taken down, then <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/philadelphia-presidents-house-slavery-exhibit-restored\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">partially restored<\/a>, as part of a monthslong legal fight rooted in an executive order issued by President Donald Trump. Citing a 2006 agreement, the city sued the Park Service and the Interior Department in January after it abruptly removed the exhibit to comply with the order.\n  <\/p>\n<p>In its unanimous ruling, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals found that the city does not have any \u201cstatutory, property, or contractual rights that empower it to curate the exhibits in the President\u2019s House.\u201d The judges also concluded that the Trump administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/inde\/planyourvisit\/presidentshousesite.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">replacement panels<\/a>, which NPS has posted online, are \u201cfull of historical context.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey highlight the momentous events that took place in the President\u2019s House and the other sites at Independence National Historical Park.
