A mixed-income development on East Fourth Street is closer to breaking ground after securing state funding.<\/p>\n
The proposed mixed-income housing development in Bethlehem has received $1 million in state funding as part of a broader $17.2 million investment in 56 community projects across Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n
The funding comes through Gov. Josh Shapiro\u2019s Main Street Matters initiative, which aims to revitalize downtowns, support small businesses and strengthen local economies.<\/p>\n
The Gateway on Fourth development, planned for the former Szilagyi Fuel and Dancho sites at 1400-1414 E. Fourth St., will include a combination of 120 apartments and townhomes across two phases, along with commercial space expected to be occupied by Neighborhood Health Centers.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery community in Pennsylvania, whether rural, suburban or urban, relies on a strong Main Street to support local businesses, create jobs and bring people together,\u201d Shapiro said.<\/p>\n
The project, 15 years in the making, is in the design and permitting phase. The Bethlehem Planning Commission recently approved preliminary plans, and the project is scheduled to return in July for additional recommendations, according to Laura Collins, director of Bethlehem Community and Economic Development.<\/p>\n
Collins said construction is projected to begin in early 2027.<\/p>\n
In addition to the Main Street Matters grant, the project has received a Pennsylvania Local Share grant and $550,000 in redevelopment assistance through CAP funding.<\/p>\n
Developer Pennrose said it anticipates closing on construction financing for the first phase by the end of this year.<\/p>\n
