{"id":223925,"date":"2026-06-20T14:58:06","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T14:58:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/223925\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T14:58:06","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T14:58:06","slug":"police-arrest-scranton-man-in-monroe-county-homicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/223925\/","title":{"rendered":"Police arrest Scranton man in Monroe County homicide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pocono Mountain Regional Police have made an arrest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcall.com\/2026\/06\/19\/one-killed-during-fight-in-monroe-county-police-say\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">connection with a Thursday homicide in Monroe County.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yasim McDonald, 27, is in police custody and charged with criminal homicide and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence in connection with the fatal shooting of Layzon Breland, 26, in Coolbaugh Township on Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p>According to a news release, police arrived at 123 Chelsea Circle in Coolbaugh Township at 7:52 p.m. Thursday for reports of a person with gunshot wounds. Police found Breland suffering a wound to his head in an upstairs bedroom in the home; witnesses told authorities that Breland had been in a physical fight in the front yard of the home with another male, later identified as McDonald.<\/p>\n<p>Following the fight, Breland entered the home, and McDonald entered forcibly with a handgun and chased Breland to the upstairs bedroom. Both men were armed and a gunfight ensued, during which both men were hit by gunfire. Breland succumbed to his injuries.<\/p>\n<p>According to witness testimony, Breland fled the scene in a white vehicle, leaving a blood trail form the bedroom through the home and onto the street.<\/p>\n<p>McDonald entered a Scranton hospital suffering from a gunshot wound at about 8:19 p.m., according to a news release. Authorities identified the white vehicle in which he fled the scene as belonging to his girlfriend, and obtained search warrants from the crime scene and connected DNA samples belonging to McDonald via a rapid DNA analysis.<\/p>\n<p>McDonald remains hospitalized in police custody and will be arraigned \u201conce prudent,\u201d according to police.<\/p>\n<p>Pocono Mountain Regional Police were assisted by the Pennsylvania State Police, the Scranton Police Department, the Monroe County District Attorney\u2019s Office and the Monroe County Coroner\u2019s Office in the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Reporter Lindsay Weber can be reached at Liweber@mcall.com.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Pocono Mountain Regional Police have made an arrest in connection with a Thursday homicide in Monroe County.
