Williamsport, Pa. \u2014 Oam Patel of Williamsport, a first-year medical student at Geisinger’s School of Medicine, was awarded Best in Show: Gold out of more than 500 posters at the American Medical Association Research Conference in Chicago for his poster presentation, “Plaque Radiotherapy for Posterior Uveal Melanoma in 4000 Eyes: Analysis of >\/= 15 letter visual acuity loss in the pre-anti-VEGF era.”<\/a><\/p>\n The award recognizes both the scientific merit of the work and its potential impact on future efforts to improve quality of life for patients undergoing treatment for ocular (eye) cancer.<\/p>\n Conducted in collaboration with the Ocular Oncology Service at Wills Eye Hospital under the mentorship of Dr. Carol Shields, the study examined visual outcomes in 4,000 patients treated with plaque radiotherapy for uveal melanoma, the most common primary eye cancer in adults.<\/p>\n By establishing one of the largest historical benchmarks ever reported for visual outcomes following plaque radiotherapy, the study provides an important reference point for evaluating modern vision-preserving therapies and future advances in ocular oncology.<\/p>\n Patel said of his research, “One of the most important questions in medicine is whether a new treatment truly improves outcomes. To answer that, we first need to understand what outcomes looked like before those treatments existed. This study helps provide that foundation for future research aimed at preserving vision in patients with uveal melanoma.”<\/p>\n \n Success!
