We begin tonight with a number of charitable walks supporting meaningful causes\u2014highlighted by Erie\u2019s Walk to Defeat ALS, which is helping make a difference for families affected by Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n
The local event supports research, advocacy, and care services for those living with ALS, a progressive motor neuron disease. While the walk itself is less than a half mile, organizers say its impact stretches far beyond the route.<\/p>\n
This year, about 250 participants made their way around UPMC Park, many walking with heavy hearts but strong determination. What began as a small effort has continued to grow into a powerful movement, helping drive progress in the fight against ALS.<\/p>\n
Among those personally affected is the family of State Senator Dan Laughlin. His 30-year-old son was diagnosed with ALS 18 months ago and is currently participating in a clinical trial in Montreal\u2014offering hope for new treatments and advancements.<\/p>\n
Organizers set an ambitious fundraising goal of $50,000. By the end of the event, that goal was not only met but exceeded, with more than $75,000 raised to support ongoing efforts.<\/p>\n
