New traffic control changes are set to take effect Wednesday, June 24, at several intersections aimed at improving safety and reflecting current roadway conditions across the City of Erie.<\/p>\n
Among the updates is the removal of the stop sign configuration at W. 6th St. and Maryland Ave., a change that city officials say follows a detailed review of traffic patterns and safety standards.<\/p>\n
The intersection was temporarily converted into a four-way stop in 2021 during the Kahkwa Bridge closure. Officials note the configuration was intended as a short-term traffic control measure during the detour period.<\/p>\n
After the bridge reopened, the intersection was reassessed using MUTCD and PennDOT standards, including crash history, sight distance, and traffic volume data. Following that review, it was determined the location does not meet the criteria to remain an all-way stop.<\/p>\n
City officials acknowledge community concerns regarding speeding in the area, noting that stop signs are not designed as speed control tools. Instead, other traffic-calming strategies are being used to support the transition.<\/p>\n
To help drivers adjust, officials say they are following a phased approach recommended by PennDOT, which includes a brief warning period, flashing beacons, electronic message boards, and updated signage in the area.<\/p>\n
The City of Erie will be implementing several traffic control updates following resident requests and results from recent traffic studies aimed at improving safety and traffic flow.<\/p>\n
City Council has approved the installation of three new stop signs at key intersections:<\/p>\n
McCarter Ave. & Pennsylvania Ave. (McCarter Ave. will stop)<\/p>\n
Atkins St. & Birch Ct. (Birch Ct. will stop)<\/p>\n
E. 39th St. & Fruit St. (Fruit St. will stop)<\/p>\n
The changes are intended to address neighborhood concerns and improve safety at these locations.<\/p>\n
As part of the same review process, the city will also remove the traffic signal at W. 10th St. & Cascade St. following a transition period. A stop sign will be installed on the northbound Cascade Street.<\/p>\n
In addition, the temporary all-way stop at W. 6th St. & Maryland Ave. will be removed, returning the intersection to a two-way stop configuration on Maryland Ave.<\/p>\n
