Today, the American Lung Association released the 2025 \u201cState of the Air\u201d report, reveals that Allentown-Bethlehem-East Stroudsburg, PA-NJ metro area\u2019s daily particle pollution worsens as 2023 wildfire smoke contributes to poorer air quality. The metro area was named 50th most polluted in the nation for daily particle pollution, dropping from a C to an F grade and shows improvement for year-round particle pollution ranking 105th worst in the nation vs. 84th worst in nation from last year\u2019s report. Ozone measures also worsened, though the area\u2019s rank did improve. Nationally, the report found that 156 million people (46%) are living in areas that had unhealthy levels of air pollution.<\/p>\n
The Lung Association\u2019s 26th annual \u201cState of the Air\u201d report grades exposure to unhealthy levels of ground-level ozone air pollution (also known as smog), and year-round and short-term spikes in particle pollution (also known as soot) over a three-year period. The report looks at the latest quality-assured air quality data from 2021-2023.<\/p>\n
“The air pollutants highlighted in this report are widespread and pose a risk to everyone\u2019s health. Both ozone and particle pollution can lead to premature death and cause serious health issues such as asthma attacks, heart attacks, strokes, preterm births, and even problems with cognitive function later in life. Particle pollution can also increase the risk of lung cancer,\u201d said Elizabeth Hensil, Director of Advocacy in Pennsylvania, American Lung Association.<\/p>\n
\u201cSadly, too many people in the metro area are living with dangerous levels of ozone and particle pollution. This pollution is making kids have asthma attacks, causing people who work outdoors to get sick and unable to work, and even contributing to low birth weight in babies. We\u2019re urging Pennsylvania policymakers to take action to improve our air quality. We\u2019re also calling on everyone to support the vital work of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).\u201d<\/p>\n

The ranking was based on the area\u2019s worst county\u2019s average number of unhealthy days\u20141.8 days per year, a C grade, in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. This was better than the area’s ranking in last year’s report of 79th worst, with 1 day per year, a C grade.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Particle Pollution in the Allentown-Bethlehem-East Stroudsburg, PA-NJ metro area:<\/p>\n
The report also tracked short-term spikes in particle pollution, which can be extremely dangerous and even deadly. The Allentown-Bethlehem-East Stroudsburg, PA-NJ metro area ranked 50th worst in the nation for short-term particle pollution. The ranking was based on the area\u2019s worst county\u2019s average number of unhealthy days\u20143.8 days per year, an F grade, in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. This was worse than the area’s ranking in last year’s report of 79th worst, with 1 day per year, a C grade.\u00a0<\/p>\n
For the year-round average level of particle pollution, the area\u2019s worst county, Warren County, New Jersey, received a passing grade for pollution levels below the federal standard. The Allentown-Bethlehem-East Stroudsburg, PA-NJ metro area ranked 103rd worst in the nation. This was better than the area’s ranking in last year’s report of 84th worst in the nation.<\/p>\n
In addition to the Allentown-Bethlehem-East Stroudsburg, PA-NJ metro area, other notable findings across Pennsylvania include:<\/p>\n
\tLancaster rejoins national<\/a> worst 25 list at 22nd worst in nation (2nd worst in the Mid-Atlantic) for daily particle pollution and received a failing grade for year-round particle pollution.\u00a0 The \u201cState of the Air\u201d report found that 156 million people in the U.S. (46%) live in an area that received a failing grade for at least one measure of air pollution and 42.5 million people live in areas with failing grades for all three measures. The report also found that a person of color in the U.S. is more than twice as likely as a white individual to live in a community with a failing grade on all three pollution measures. Notably, Hispanic individuals are nearly three times as likely as white individuals to live in a community with three failing grades.<\/p>\n In this year\u2019s \u201cState of the Air\u201d report, the Lung Association is calling on everyone to support the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. EPA is essential to protecting people\u2019s health from ozone and particle pollution.
