PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) \u2014 Severe storms rolled through the Philadelphia region Monday night and packed quite a punch. Trees were knocked down, and many streets and basements were flooded. Some people were even forced out of their homes because of the damage.<\/p>\n
In one instance, a tree fell onto two row homes on Jackson Street, near Levick Street, in the Tacony section of Northeast Philadelphia. The roots of the tree ripped a chunk of dirt and part of the sidewalk out of the ground, and water filled the gaping hole beneath. <\/p>\n
George, who lives across the street, said the storm intensified.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I came home, I noticed the wind got really strong. I haven\u2019t seen winds like that in a long time,\u201d he said. \u201cI was upstairs in my house and I heard the loud crack, and that\u2019s when I came down and looked.\u201d<\/p>\n
Two affected families, 10 people total, were displaced and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross, which is also helping three people who were forced out of a partially collapsed building on East Tuplehocken Street in West Oak Lane.<\/p>\n
There was street flooding in different parts of the region as well. It looked like a river flowing down some blocks, as seen on video posted on social media<\/a>. <\/p>\n Even with all the damage, power outages were not as widespread as in previous storms. Only about 500 homes and businesses were still without power as of 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to PECO.<\/p>\n
