Marianne (Mann) DeStefano, Scranton, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday.

Born in Scranton on July 3, 1943 to the late Michael and Ann Scartelli Mann, Marianne was a graduate of Dunmore High School and Marywood College where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education with a focus on teaching art. Her passion for teaching would carry her through the next five decades of teaching. She retired from the Scranton Hebrew Day School where she taught for over 40 of those years.

Shortly after graduating college, on August 5, 1967, Marianne married James (Jim) DeStefano and settled in Scranton. After almost 59 years of marriage, Jim was by her side when she passed on Wednesday.

A teacher through and through, she spent her life helping others to better themselves. Guided by her strong Catholic faith and her love of family, she always made herself available to help at home, at school, and at one of the many churches where she volunteered her time, but her greatest love was the time she spent with her grandchildren. Whether in person or on the phone, she was always there for them.

She is survived by her husband Jim, son Jim and wife Michelle, her son David and wife Christine, and her grandchildren Taylor, Dominick and Thomas, nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her sister Elaine (Fischer).

The funeral will be Thursday at 9:30 AM from the August J. Haas Funeral Home, Inc., 202 Pittston Ave., with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in Immaculate Conception Church, 801 Taylor Ave., to be celebrated by Rev. Jeffrey Tudgay, Pastor. Interment Dunmore Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.
