After a child was hit by a car over the weekend in Allentown, a City Council member is urging residents and drivers to be careful when driving in the city.<\/p>\n
Council member Cynthia Mota was officiating a wedding downtown Saturday night when a 10-year-old girl was hit by a car on Sixth Street and Hamilton Boulevard, she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe accident happened in front of the bride and many of the wedding guests, and it was heartbreaking and deeply emotional for everyone there,\u201d she said Monday in a statement.<\/p>\n
City police Assistant Chief James Gress said the incident was still under investigation. Additional information was not available Monday.<\/p>\n
Mota, the chair of the public works committee, noted that she has been working to approve funding and support projects that make streets safer, which include updated traffic signals and other improvements.<\/p>\n
She acknowledged that the winter was tough, and that people are excited to be outside once the weather improved. Still, she said people should do their part, adding that it is easy to get distracted.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have to make sure that the drivers don\u2019t drive that fast, but at the same time, I am urging the community to be aware of their surroundings,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
