A rare bird at the National Aviary on Pittsburgh’s North Side is creating a major buzz in the northeast. <\/p>\n
The Aviary recently welcomed Dari\u00e9na, a one-year-old female Harpy Eagle from the Miami Zoo, and she is the only known Harpy Eagle in the entire Northeast, weighing around 17 to 20 pounds.<\/p>\n
Cathy Schlott is the Director of Animal Programs and Experiences at the National Aviary. <\/p>\n
She tells the Big K morning Show that Dari\u00e9na is a very impressive bird:<\/p>\n
\u201cThey can be up to 40-inches tall, so they\u2019re very large eagles and they\u2019re just very impressive with their crest and how they look and it\u2019s also impressive that they have large feet and talons to be able to eat arboreal mammals in the rainforest and they have talons that are like four to five inches long, that\u2019s like the size of a grizzly bear\u2019s talons,\u201d said Schlott. <\/p>\n
