SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Soccer fans are in for two weekends of FIFA World Cup excitement, as full details have officially been announced by the Lackawanna County Visitors Bureau for the upcoming watch parties in Scranton.

The events are part of the Pennsylvania World Cup Fan Zone initiative, with Scranton selected as one of just three regional fan zone locations across the Commonwealth.

The Lackawanna County Visitors Bureau, joined by county commissioners and the mayor, shared plans for Scranton’s free FIFA World Cup Watch Parties, set for July 4-5 and July 18-19 on Tuesday.

Organizers said the World Cup Fan Zone at Courthouse Square will offer a festival-like atmosphere featuring an America 250 experience, a Michelob Ultra Beer Garden, prizes, giveaways, and more.

Executive Director with the Lackawanna County Visitors Bureau, Curt Camoni, shared what fans can expect.

“Those World Cup matches can be seen at our main stage, which is 13ft by 29ft, main stage for 6’ by 9’ satellite TVs that will be around Courthouse Square. Spanish language broadcast will be available on at least 1 or 2 of those screens,” said Camoni.

“We will have the Onvo Kids Zone. We’re very proud to have sponsor Onvo on board with us. And that will include inflatables, obstacle course, slides for the kids, a skills and drills clinic area where we are going to roll turf out right on to a city street and with the help of our wonderful volunteers from soccer clubs all around Lackawanna County, put on skills and drills clinics for any kids that want to participate,” said Camoni.

“A 15ft-by-15ft soccer simulator. It’s kind of one of the wild things that will be available on Courthouse Square. Think of a golf simulator. Only for soccer,” said Camoni.

Organizers also released fan zone and traffic maps for downtown Scranton. Streets around Courthouse Square will be closed, but city garages and additional parking at the Forum, Lackawanna College, and the University of Scranton will be available. Downtown construction will also pause during the events.

Commissioner Bill Gaughan and Mayor Paige Cognetti said the watch parties will bring fans from all over, and a boost to local businesses.

“Courthouse Square is going to become the living room of Lackawanna County, a place where families gather, friends reconnect, and visitors from throughout the region come together to celebrate the world’s game. There’s people that are not going to want to drive down to Philadelphia. They’re going to want to get the experience here in Scranton. And so, I think we got a preview of that last Monday,” said Gaughan.

“We are grateful for the partnership with the county, with the Visitors Bureau, with Times-Shamrock and just all of the businesses and local nonprofits downtown as well, to make sure that we have an event that’s not only fun for the participants, but also beneficial for the businesses that are downtown,” said Cognetti.

And for music fans, the entertainment lineup is set to take center stage, including Cruel Summer, Eco Del Sur, The Wankers, Hanson, and Tonic.
