Maurer was convicted of locking Schollenberger in a room and starving him in their Annville Township home. His death was ruled to be the result of blunt force head trauma.  Maurer argued that her defense counsel was ineffective during her 2022 trial. However, the state Superior Court disagreed, saying the evidence supported her conviction.  Maurer was sentenced to life in prison.
