Kane \u2013 Scranton Times-Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\t\t\tJohn S. Kane \t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tOBITUARY\t\t<\/p>\n<p>John S. Kane, of the Minooka section of Scranton, passed away peacefully on Fathers Day, June 21, 2026, at Oak Ridge Nursing Home in Taylor, Pennsylvania, surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of the late Kathleen Gallagher Kane, who preceded him in death on July 28, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\nBorn at home in Minooka, he was the son of the late John F. Kane and Florence C. Osterland Kane. John was a lifelong member of Divine Mercy Parish and a proud graduate of South Catholic High School. He dedicated his career to public service as a member of the City of Scranton Fire Department, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Ancient Order of Hibernians held a special place in John\u2019s heart. He served with distinction as Division President, County President, State President, and as a National Director. In recognition of his lifelong dedication to the organization and its mission, he was awarded National Life Membership.<\/p>\n<p>\nJohn\u2019s commitment to faith and youth development was equally remarkable. He was actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America and served on the Catholic Committee on Scouting. As an instructor for the Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII religious emblems, he guided countless young Scouts in their faith and leadership journeys.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn recognition of his dedicated service to Catholic Scouting and the spiritual formation of youth, John was honored with the St. George Emblem, one of the highest awards in Catholic Scouting. He was also the recipient of the Ad Altare Dei and Pope Pius XII Scouting Awards.<\/p>\n<p>\nThroughout his life, John remained deeply involved in numerous community organizations, including Minooka Little League, the Boy Scouts of America, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He devoted countless hours to service, mentorship, and the betterment of his community, leaving behind a legacy of faith, leadership, and generosity.<\/p>\n<p>\nJohn is survived by his daughter, Ellen Owens and her husband, Brian, of Scranton; his sons, John F. Kane of Minooka and James E. Kane and his significate other Maria Mazzara of Port Jervis, New York. He was a proud grandfather to Robert J. Kane ESQ. and his wife, Cindi; Shane Gerrity Owens; and Bridget Kane. He was also blessed with three great-grandchildren: Jackson R. Kane, Robert Spry, and Cullen Spry. He is also survived by many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn addition to his wife and parents, John was preceded in death by his grandson, James D. Kane, and his granddaughters, Coleen Gerrity and Stacey Richards Spry.<\/p>\n<p>\nThe family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Michael Gordon of Clarks Summit, the compassionate staff at Oak Ridge Nursing Home, and the Hospice Care Unit in Taylor, Pennsylvania, for the exceptional care provided to John.<\/p>\n<p>\nIn accordance with Johns wishes, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, June 26, at 10 am in Divine Mercy Parish, located at 312 Davis Street in the Minooka section of Scranton. Interment will follow at St. Josephs Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p>\nArrangements are under the care and direction of Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton.<\/p>\n<p>\nJohn S.
