{"id":226877,"date":"2026-06-24T14:35:52","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T14:35:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/226877\/"},"modified":"2026-06-24T14:35:52","modified_gmt":"2026-06-24T14:35:52","slug":"schools-out-but-philly-kids-are-back-in-the-classroom-for-summer-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/226877\/","title":{"rendered":"School\u2019s out, but Philly kids are back in the classroom for summer programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) \u2014 School\u2019s out, but many kids are going right back for the city\u2019s summer programs.<\/p>\n<p>The city kicked off its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/2026-05-08-register-now-make-this-summer-unforgettable-with-summer-achievers-summer-camp-at-edey-schools-2\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Summer Achievers programs<\/a> this week, taking place at 70 Philadelphia schools. <\/p>\n<p>Anne-Marie Constable, the city\u2019s Extended Day\/Extended Year coordinator at Anne Frank Elementary School in the Northeast, said students get math and reading lessons in the morning, then fun activities in the afternoon, including arts and crafts, basketball, Frisbee games, and Friday field trips.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not on electronics. They\u2019re not in front of the TV. They\u2019re not home by themselves. Their parents can feel better,\u201d she said. \u201cThey can drop them off and go to work, and their kids are getting social and educational activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Constable said the programs help combat the summer slide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt keeps their brains going. And these kids \u2014 a lot of these kids would be home by themselves, not having any socialization or any activity. And it gives the kids routine,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd at this age, you need that routine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Citywide, spots in these six-week summer programs are 87% filled.
