(WOLF) — A local shop built on inclusion is growing its reach in a big way.

Coffee Inclusive has announced plans to open a second location later this year at the United Neighborhood Center in Scranton, expanding opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to gain job training and employment experience.

The expansion also supports its original mission of helping individuals build skills for greater independence. Marketing Coordinator for Coffee Inclusive and PA Inclusive, Brendan Karolchyk, shared his excitement about the growth.

“This is our first time finally expanding into Lackawanna County. We’ve done plenty of events, but now we’re going to have our own standalone location. And this one is particularly exciting because we are partnering with United Neighborhood Centers, which really completes and fulfills our mission,” said Karolchyk.

As the new location takes shape, the nonprofit has launched its “Coffee A Day” campaign, aiming to raise $25,000 for startup costs, training, equipment, and other expenses. Karolchyk also shared what visitors can look forward to when the new shop opens.

“It will be a little bit smaller to start. Mainly focusing on coffee beverages and some handcrafted baked goods and sandwiches. But will slowly expand over time as we get a grip on Lackawanna County,” said Karolchyk.

Employee Brian Boston said his role at Coffee Inclusive and PA Inclusive allows him to wear many hats.

“I work in the coffee shop, the bakery, I helped put stuff together. Do the garbage, teach a cooking class, clean the office. I organize stuff, interior design,” said Boston.

Boston also said the experience has helped him build connections, meet new people, and find support for his 45-minute commute to work.

“I’ve gotten to meet all different kinds of people. I’m a local celebrity, as I’m called. I’m disabled but not as disabled as some people. So, the community helps for that because I get to reach out to different community members and see if they know someone, or them themselves might be able to help out,” said Boston.

Christina Wesley, who has worked at Coffee Inclusive for three years, shared the responsibilities she takes on each day.

“I love it. I make smoothies, make other drinks, baking,” said Wesley.

Karolchyk said the second location is expected to open by late 2026.

To learn more about Coffee Inclusive’s “Coffee A Day” campaign, click here.

PITTSTON, LUZERNE CO.
