Each year, one of Western New York\u2019s most meaningful events is held in honor of our military veterans. Through the partnership of Dream Catcher Sportfishing, WNY Heroes, LLC, and dozens of volunteer charter captains, veterans are given a free fishing day on Lake Erie that reminds them they are not forgotten.<\/p>\n
On Friday, veterans from across the region can participate in the 10th annual WNY Heroes Fishing Day to enjoy a full day of fishing on Lake Erie at no cost. The event runs from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Dunkirk Harbor from the Clarion Hotel Pavilion with pre-registration required. Military veterans or active military may register by calling 716-630-5020, ext. 209 or emailing dcollege@wnyheroes.org. Veterans representing several generations of military service typically share stories, laughter and friendship. The event creates an atmosphere of support, gratitude and mutual respect.<\/p>\n
Lake Erie\u2019s calm waters offer more than recreation. Fishing has long been recognized as a powerful stress reliever, and the peaceful environment provides veterans an opportunity to reconnect with nature and with one another. The combination of outdoor recreation and community support creates a truly therapeutic experience. Events such as this also raise awareness of the ongoing needs of veterans and the importance of community involvement. They highlight the year-round work of organizations like WNY Heroes, which has provided advocacy, financial assistance, education and support programs to veterans and their families since 2007.<\/p>\n
Special thanks go to Captain Jim Steel, Diane Steel, the Dream Catcher Sportfishing team, WNY Heroes, the volunteer captains and the many dedicated volunteers whose generosity makes this unforgettable day possible. Their commitment demonstrates the remarkable impact that local businesses, nonprofit organizations and community volunteers can have when they unite to support those who have served our nation.<\/p>\n
Later the same day, note that the mandatory captains meeting for \u201cThe Walleye Duel in Dunkirk\u201d is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bart\u2019s Cove. The tournament returns Saturday and Sunday to Bart\u2019s Cove with Tournament Director Mark Mohr expecting the largest field in the event\u2019s history. The Walleye Duel features a trolling-only format, prohibiting casting and jigging presentations. By eliminating those techniques, the event also removes the competitive advantage of forward-facing sonar tactics, emphasizing traditional trolling methods that have long defined Lake Erie walleye fishing.
