PITTSBURGH \u2014 With temperatures expected to climb into the mid to upper 90s this week, Allegheny County is preparing for dangerous heat conditions by issuing a Code Red Heat Advisory<\/a> from Monday through Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The hot weather has many people looking for ways to stay cool, whether that\u2019s grabbing ice cream, heading to a pool or adjusting outdoor plans.<\/p>\n

\u201cI try to stay on top of it,\u201d said runner Jared Jenkins. \u201cI haven\u2019t seen it for next week, I just know you got to be adaptable as a Pittsburgher.\u201d<\/p>\n

Others say they don\u2019t have much choice but to be outside despite the heat.<\/p>\n

Andy Schaner is preparing for a move this week and expects to spend much of Monday and Tuesday outdoors.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what the forecast calls for. It\u2019s probably going to be hot. It\u2019s been hot the last four days,\u201d Schaner said.<\/p>\n

Health experts stress the importance of staying hydrated during extreme heat. <\/p>\n

They recommend drinking water regularly and replenishing electrolytes with sports drinks when needed.<\/p>\n

Experts also advise limiting sugary, caffeinated and alcoholic beverages, which can contribute to dehydration.<\/p>\n

\u201cHydration, sodium, take advantage of the powders that you\u2019re throwing in your water because just water isn\u2019t enough,\u201d Jenkins said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFood breaks, water breaks, Liquid I.V., you need that,\u201d Schaner added.<\/p>\n

The American Red Cross also recommends not relying on fans as a primary cooling device during extreme heat.<\/p>\n

Despite the forecast, many people say they\u2019ll find ways to stay safe while still enjoying the summer weather.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Pirate game was so hot, we\u2019re sort of scared,\u201d Christina Scott said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019m just going to do some Liquid I.V. and maybe jump in the Mon. It may be that hot,\u201d Maria Scott joked.<\/p>\n

To help residents stay cool, the City of Pittsburgh is offering free swimming lessons<\/a> for children ages 6 to 15 at neighborhood pools. <\/p>\n

The city is also opening cooling centers<\/a> and encouraging residents to check on neighbors who may not have air conditioning.<\/p>\n

Officials urge anyone spending time outdoors this week to take frequent breaks, stay hydrated and watch for signs of heat-related illness.<\/p>\n
