The First Bank of the United States will reopen in Philadelphia after 50 years on July 1, 2026, just days ahead of America’s 250th birthday.<\/p>\n
The National Historic Landmark — located on 3rd Street between Walnut and Chestnut streets — has received a $43 million dollar renovation, with $4.5 million raised by the Independence Historical Trust, and $39.3 million from the Great American Outdoors Act of 2020.<\/p>\n
As a part of the renovation, an extension to the Bank has been constructed, adding new stairways, bathrooms, an elevator, and heating and cooling systems to the pre-existing structure. <\/p>\n
Restorations of the First Bank include repairs of the original facade and preservation of the 1900 remodel of the Bank.<\/p>\n
Admission to the First Bank of the United States will be free to the public, and the historical site will be open Thursdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.<\/p>\n
The First Bank originally opened in 1797 as a part of then-Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton’s plan for a national financial system, which would economically unite the 13 original colonies of the United States. <\/p>\n
