PITTSBURGH\u00a0\u2014 Few storylines from the Steelers\u2019 2026 draft class were as memorable as seventh-round pick Eli Heidenreich.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Pittsburgh native and Mount Lebanon graduate fulfilled a lifelong dream when the Steelers selected him after a standout career at Navy. Just four years removed from helping Mount Lebanon capture a PIAA Class 6A state championship, Heidenreich heard his hometown team call his name on draft weekend.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s one of the best stories in Pittsburgh\u2019s rookie class, but feel-good stories don\u2019t guarantee roster spots. Among the Steelers\u2019 draft picks, Heidenreich may have one of the toughest paths to making the initial 53-man roster. His fit is unique because he never truly played a traditional position at Navy. The Midshipmen\u2019s offense utilized him as a slotback, a hybrid role that blended responsibilities of both a running back and wide receiver. During OTAs, however, the Steelers had Heidenreich working with the running backs, giving an early indication of where they currently envision him fitting.<\/p>\n

The challenge is that Pittsburgh\u2019s running back room is already crowded. Jaylen Warren<\/a> returns as one of the league\u2019s better change-of-pace backs, while Rico Dowdle<\/a> joined the Steelers after spending last season with the Carolina Panthers following four years under Mike McCarthy<\/a> in Dallas. The Steelers also used a third-round pick on former Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson<\/a> in last year\u2019s draft, and despite a disappointing rookie season, he\u2019ll likely be given every opportunity to earn a larger role in Year 2. Pittsburgh also brought back veteran Travis Homer in free agency this offseason, giving the Steelers no shortage of competition in the backfield.<\/p>\n

Still, there is plenty of intrigue surrounding Heidenreich. His background as both a runner and receiver gives him a unique advantage in McCarthy\u2019s offense, as the veteran head coach has long valued backs who can contribute in the passing game and line up in multiple spots. Whether it\u2019s in the backfield, split out wide or on special teams, Heidenreich\u2019s versatility could give him multiple paths to earning a roster spot throughout training camp and the preseason.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also already building a strong relationship with new running backs coach Ramon Chinyoung<\/a> Sr.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve absolutely loved working with him. Coach has been awesome. He\u2019s extremely detailed, and I think his values align with mine, first off, and that\u2019s extremely important. So far, I think he\u2019s a fantastic coach, and I\u2019m really excited to work with him over these next few months and hopefully moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Making the initial 53-man roster certainly won\u2019t be easy, but Heidenreich\u2019s versatility gives him a legitimate opportunity to earn a spot if he continues to impress throughout training camp and the preseason.<\/p>\n

A Pittsburgh native and Mount Lebanon graduate, Heidenreich became one of the feel-good stories of the Steelers\u2019 draft class after finishing his collegiate career as Navy\u2019s all-time leading receiver. Navy isn\u2019t traditionally known for producing NFL skill-position players, but Heidenreich finished his career as one of the most productive offensive weapons in school history.<\/p>\n

As a senior, he broke the Naval Academy\u2019s single-season receiving record with 941 receiving yards while becoming the first Midshipman ever to record both 100 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards in the same game. Later that season, he also became Navy\u2019s all-time leader in career receiving yards.<\/p>\n

Across 38 career games, Heidenreich totaled 169 carries for 1,157 rushing yards and seven touchdowns while adding 109 receptions for 1,994 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. His 3,151 yards from scrimmage and 23 total touchdowns cemented him as one of the most versatile offensive players in program history.<\/p>\n

The Navy standout ran a 4.44-second 40-yard dash, recorded a 35-inch vertical jump and completed 16 bench press reps. He also impressed scouts during the receiving portion of the workout, showcasing the versatility that helped make him one of the nation\u2019s top hybrid offensive weapons. His athletic testing also drew comparisons to San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, with the two posting nearly identical numbers in several drills.<\/p>\n

SALARY CAP AND CONTRACT<\/p>\n

Heidenreich signed his four-year rookie contract shortly after being selected in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft.<\/p>\n

The deal is worth\u00a0$4,535,988, carries an average annual salary of\u00a0$1,133,997, and includes\u00a0$155,988 fully guaranteed, all of which came through his signing bonus.<\/p>\n
