Helping Harvest received one of 250 truckloads of food Monday that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has committed to deliver to all 50 states to honor and celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The delivery of 40,000 pounds of food will serve those who face food insecurity in Berks and Schuylkill counties.

“America’s 250th celebration is a unifying moment for our country, and the church’s efforts are a beautiful example of the American spirit — neighbor caring for neighbor in service and generosity,” said Rosie Rios, chairwoman of the America250 Committee. “We are immensely grateful for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ collaboration and its continued support for this historic celebration.”

Rios said the committee knows that more needs to be done, but every small act of service can make a big difference to both the giver and the receiver.

Malva Snyder, communications director for the nine local congregations of the church, said they are grateful to Helping Harvest, which exemplifies caring for those in need.

“They have adapted and expanded their reach to include those who otherwise would only know the constant pangs of hunger,” she said. “We are truly thankful we can help them in this small way in their ongoing great work of feeding the hungry and restoring dignity.

“As a nation, we will continue to grow stronger as we continue to serve our neighbors, together and honor what our Founding Fathers envisioned for our future.”

Helping Harvest received one of 250 truckloads of food Monday that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day…

[11
349,182,139,28,128,130,129,231,706
post-231757","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-reading","tag-berks-county","tag-local-news","tag-news","tag-pennsylvania","tag-reading-city","tag-reading-city-headlines","tag-reading-city-news","tag-schuylkill-county","tag-top-stories-reg
["GET
