Two e-bike riders suffered injuries after colliding with a motor vehicle Saturday in South Scranton.

The riders traveled west on Cherry Street through a stop sign before hitting a vehicle traveling north on Pittston Avenue, Scranton police said. The crash happened at the intersection of those roads at about 5:30 p.m.

Officers determined both riders were injured and they were transported to Geisinger Community Medical Center. Occupants of the vehicle were not injured, police said.

Officers seized the e-bikes.

Detectives are reviewing video evidence, including footage from a COLTS bus. Charges may be filed after the investigation is complete.

“The Scranton Police Department would also like to remind the public that we have seen an increase in issues with e-bikes throughout the city as well as several reports throughout Lackawanna County,” police said in a news release. “Many of these incidents involve riders failing to obey traffic control devices, operating at unsafe speeds, riding recklessly, or otherwise failing to follow the rules of the road.”

E-bikes are not toys, but motor assisted vehicles capable of reaching speeds that can result in injury or death, police said. Riders are required to obey traffic laws, including stop signs and traffic signals, yield the right of way and operate their bikes safely and responsibly, police said.

Parents should review state laws regarding e-bikes, including age requirements, police said.
