ARCHBALD, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) \u2014 An Archbald man has been charged with criminal homicide after investigators say he used counterfeit money in an attempt to rob an 19-year-old during a marijuana transaction before fatally shooting him.<\/p>\n
Lackawanna County District Attorney Brian Gallagher announced Tuesday that 20-year-old Kayden Christopher Jurbala is charged with criminal homicide, attempted robbery causing serious bodily injury, conspiracy to commit robbery causing serious bodily injury and receiving stolen property in connection with the death of Tyvon Amari Ash.<\/p>\n
According to investigators, Archbald police responded shortly after midnight June 28 after multiple 911 callers reported hearing gunshots followed by a crash near Laurel Street Park. Officers found Ash inside a crashed 2025 Mazda CX-30 suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Geisinger Community Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Pennsylvania State Police later assumed the investigation.<\/p>\n
The criminal complaint alleges Ash traveled to the park believing he was meeting someone to sell approximately one-quarter pound of marijuana. Investigators say Jurbala instead planned to rob him by using six counterfeit $100 bills in exchange for the marijuana.<\/p>\n
According to the affidavit, after handing Ash the counterfeit money, Jurbala allegedly told him he was “going to need all that,” referring to the marijuana. When Ash realized the bills were fake and attempted to drive away, investigators allege Jurbala pulled a stolen 9mm Glock 43X handgun and fired a single shot through the open passenger-side window, striking Ash in the back.<\/p>\n
Police allege Jurbala fled the scene on foot with a juvenile accomplice, discarded the firearm in a wooded area and later changed clothes in an effort to conceal evidence. Investigators also allege the handgun had been stolen from a vehicle in Blakely Borough several days before the shooting, leading to the additional receiving stolen property charge.<\/p>\n
State police said the investigation included witness interviews, surveillance video, forensic evidence, cellphone analysis and multiple search warrants that ultimately linked Jurbala to the shooting. Investigators recovered clothing and other evidence during the investigation and identified the fatal weapon as the stolen Glock.<\/p>\n
