How high temperatures will climb and what you can expect for the 4th of July. *** fire here outside Best of the batch right there in the corner. What fire marshals say started this and what the founder Charlie Batch has to say. *** federal lawsuit alleges that staff at the Heritage Valley Hospital System. And swiftly covered up numerous alleged crimes of an emergency department nurse. I’ll break it all down tonight. We’re at the middle point and then we just stopped. When Monica Johnson got on the wild mouse roller coaster here at Ida Wild with her cousin, she ended up being on that ride for *** lot longer than she anticipated. Tonight you’ll hear her account about how she had to be saved along with two other people from the coaster on Monday. Pittsburgh’s action news 4 at 5 starts now. Well, you’ve felt it all day. An extreme heat warning is here. Temperatures are in the 90s and it feels even hotter. This is the first of 5 straight severe weather alert days with this dangerous weather not going anywhere, and we are tracking all of this for you here on Pittsburgh’s Action is 4. We’re glad you’re with us. I’m Kelly Sasso. I’m Andrew Stocky. We’re joined by our chief meteorologist Mike Harvey in your certified most accurate forecast, as Kelly mentioned, this is only the beginning. It is only the beginning, and this is our coolest of the days we’ll see as we go through the next few days. Right now we’re sitting at 91 degrees for air temperature. Beaver at 93, but you can see many locations that are in the 90s, including Katanning at 93, Monroeville at 91, Greensburg 91, and Uniontown at 90 degrees. You add in the humidity. And some locations feel like 100 degrees. Katanning, Greensburg up to *** beaver and other locations earlier in the day hit that mark with the humidity and the temperature, that feels like temperature as we go into tomorrow. We’re sitting at 91 now. Tomorrow we’re heading to the upper 90s and the, uh, feels like temperature is going to be even worse as we head through the day. We are looking at high temperatures tomorrow, hitting 97 in Butler in Pittsburgh. 95 in Washington, 95 in Waynesburg, and 96 Greensburg. We could hit 99 in Beaverford tomorrow. So obviously we do have an extreme heat warning that is across the board for everybody and that’s going to be with us all the way through until Friday at 10:00 p.m. So here we go as we go through the rest of the week. On Wednesday in Pittsburgh, 97 degrees. It’ll feel like 106 degrees Thursday and Friday, both days all the way up to 90. 98 degrees it’ll feel like 107 and then for the Fourth of July on Saturday 93 degrees and it’ll feel like 102 degrees. We’ll have more on your holiday Fourth of July weekend that’s coming up in just *** few minutes. All right, Mike, thank you. Well, we know so many of you are trying to find ways to stay cool throughout this. Reporter Yasmin Rodriguez is joining us live, and Yasmin, we understand you spoke with *** doctor today about some ways to stay safe if you do have to be outside. Kelly, that’s right. So when it comes to these pretty high extreme temperatures, doctors at Allegheny General Hospital say they do see *** rise in heat-related illnesses, and it becomes everything from just the need to cool down your body to an actual heat stroke. So when it comes to *** heat stroke, doctors want you to watch out for these warning signs and symptoms. Excessive tiredness, sweating profusely, can’t stop sweating, nauseous, vomiting to the point where they feel like they’re so fatigued, muscle cramps, those are reasons that you need to get out of the situation you’re in, get somewhere and cool down. And that extreme fatigue that Doctor Rao first mentioned is the symptom you want to pay attention to the most in this heat. He says if you are way more tired than you should, that’s *** sign something serious is happening. And he says if you do overheat, it does not take long for serious symptom. To develop and then *** trip to the emergency room. So if you have to be outside, you want to limit your time, and of course, staying hydrated is very important. Doctor Rao also pointed out how young children and our elderly are most vulnerable in this type of heat, saying they’re the ones that are going to overheat just *** bit faster. If you have somebody that’s in their 80s, that’s just outside in the direct sunlight, it may only take minutes to somebody that maybe is maybe 40 years old, is in relatively decent shape, it might take *** little bit more time. And so the question on *** lot of people’s mind is how can I stay safe and stay cool. Well, coming up at 6, I’ll show you *** few of the ways, and spoiler, it does actually involve *** lot of ice cream. I’m covering Allegheny County in Wilkinsburg. Yasmin Rodriguez, Pittsburgh’s actions 4. Yasmin, sounds good. Thank you. Well today fire. Fires had to contend with this extreme heat as they battled *** fire in Munhall. Flames damaged the Best of the Batch Foundation building, the former, actually the charity of former Steeler quarterback Charlie Batch. Reporter Marcy Cipriani joining us live from that location tonight. So Marcy, what kind of damage are we talking about here? Well, Andrew, the fire was contained to the back of the building. I’m gonna show you where it was right here on the back of the best of the batch building. That right there, that is the gymnasium. Now when the first firefighters started heading here, they tell me they could see it burning in the distance. You know, I could see *** column of smoke from several blocks away. When I pulled up, um, I could see people in the back with extinguishers looked like *** grill on fire, um, so they were knocking the grill down. By that time it was just smoke, but I could see *** burn mark up the corner of the wall. Um, so I went inside to check for extension, and, uh, one of the people that was already here said, yeah, it’s burning there behind. The wall, so we did have extensions. So at that point we called *** 2nd alarm. Munhall’s 2nd assistant fire chief says that 2nd alarm, which brings more crews, helps in the intense heat too, giving crew the chance to rest. He says the fire was in the back of Best of the Batch Foundation, *** nonprofit founded by former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch in 1999. They hold classes and camps here. In *** statement, Charlie Batch tells me there were no campers inside at the time of the incident and all individuals are safe. The well-being of our children, staff, volunteers, and families remain our highest priority. The foundation is working diligently with local fire, fire marshals, and other personnel to ensure the building is in safe condition to resume camp, Munhall. Fire officials say the damage inside will take restoration, but they say those who were inside at the time of the fire, volunteers and staff, according to Batch, acted quickly. Everybody was out OK. Yeah, everybody got out safely, no injuries, and they, they did *** really good job of evacuating. You know, they were out of here by the time I got here. They, they were pretty much, they evacuated. Everybody was out, so they did really well. The Allegheny County fire marshal spent much of today focused on *** propane tank here, and late this afternoon they determined the fire was accidental. In fact, they say it was related to an unattended outdoor cooking operation. I can tell you that restoration crews are here now. We watched them pull up just moments ago. Batch tells me they are in the process of drying out the inside. He says there’s minimal damage in there, and they’re working to make sure they can get that smell of smoke out. He says he Hopes to determine in the next few hours whether campers can come back tomorrow. Covering Allegheny County from Munhall, Marcy Cipriani, Pittsburgh’s Action News for. Marcy, thank you. Now we want to turn to some breaking news. *** man was killed in Shadyside today. Police say he fell from *** ladder. Pittsburgh Public Safety says it happened at 1:20 on Kentucky Avenue near Denniston Street. Investigators believe that contractor fell some 20 ft and hit his head. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. More breaking news now in Butler County. Police have charged *** man in connection with *** body that was found in *** trash bin. Officers found the body concealed in *** bin on North Main Street yesterday. Investigators say it had been there, they believe, for several days. Police say Cavell Watkins, who lived at the home, says the person likely died from an overdose, and Watkins placed them in the trash bin several days after their death. He is being charged with delivery of narcotics and abuse of *** corpse. An update to *** story you saw is breaking news at 4 yesterday. The railroad crossing in Maxwell, Fayette County is back open. Work on that railroad prevented people from entering or leaving the neighborhood earlier today, but traffic is now back open. Well, today Pittsburgh City Council approved settlement payments for the victims of the Fern Hollow Bridge collapse. Pittsburghers, of course, will remember that bridge carrying Forbes Avenue over Frick Park collapsed in January of 2022. *** couple of vehicles and *** bus fell about 100 ft, and amazingly nobody was killed. Several people were hurt though. Today council approved *** total of $445,000 for nine victims who filed suit. An emergency department nurse allegedly caused the death of at least 2 people at Heritage Valley Health System. That is according to *** new federal whistleblower lawsuit covering Allegheny County tonight. Reporter Kayleigh Gunderson joins us live in Sewickley to break down this lawsuit for us, Kayleigh. Well, Andrew Kelly, the 78 page lawsuit filed in federal court under the False Claims Act alleges that numerous crimes happened here at the Heritage Valley Health System Hospital in Swickley. The majority of those claims alleged center around one emergency department nurse, Nolan Chismeyer. The lawsuit just unsealed this month alleges Heritage Valley Health System, executives, supervising physicians, and nursing managers enabled the alleged crimes of Chismere. It alleges he submitted false health insurance claims for medications that were never given to patients for 8 years, stole controlled substances from the hospital for personal use, worked shifts under the influence of drugs to the point that he was unable to provide proper care, and diverted morphine from *** pain patient. The lawsuit details two deaths in particular that occurred under his watch. It says in late 2024, *** seventy-year-old woman showed up with *** non-life threatening condition, and Chismeyer allegedly failed to provide care for hours before making an error in her medication that allegedly led to her death. The lawsuit also alleges Chismeyer failed to care for *** 47-year-old man who came in experiencing alcohol withdrawal. It says the patient became frustrated and left the emergency department. Then minutes later he was found suffering *** head wound in the parking lot and was dragged by staff back into the hospital, then transferred to Allegheny General, where he died. It alleges that after each death, the health system did not do *** root cause investigation, drug testing of Chismere, or seek discipline. Attorney Joe Valenti, who represents the two RNs who brought these allegations forward, said, quote, We continue to investigate the allegations in the litigation and. Contact from all individuals with knowledge of potential HVHS misconduct or who may have been injured by actions in the HVHS Swickley Emergency department, and Valenti said as of the date that the lawsuit was unsealed this month, Chismeyer was still employed by Heritage Valley Health System. And we’ve reached out to the attorneys representing the Heritage Valley Health System as well as all seven individual defendants named in this lawsuit, but we have not yet heard back.
