No one was injured when a SEPTA<\/a> train went off the rails early Wednesday morning in North Philadelphia, but the incident caused major disruptions to Regional Rail service.<\/p>\n

Fifty people, including three SEPTA employees, were aboard the outbound Manayunk-Norristown Line train that derailed just after midnight between the North Philadelphia and Wayne Junction stations, transit officials said.<\/p>\n

The train was traveling slowly \u2014 at about 10 mph, according to SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch \u2014 and riders were taken to Wayne Junction to board a shuttle bus.<\/p>\n

Busch said the cars were re-railed and removed by 7 a.m. Wednesday and that crews were on site repairing \u201cmoderate damage\u201d to the tracks.<\/p>\n

The Manayunk\/Norristown, Fox Chase and Chestnut Hill East lines were suspended in the wake of the accident. Lansdale\/Doylestown, Warminster and West Trenton line passengers were forced to get on and off at Fern Rock to access Center City. And the Airport, Media\/Wawa, Wilmington\/Newark, Paoli\/Thorndale, Trenton and Chestnut Hill West trains were terminating at Suburban Station, instead of continuing on to Jefferson. SEPTA anticipated track repairs would be completed Wednesday, with service potentially returning in the afternoon or evening hours, Busch said. Authority officials are confident that full service will be in place for the Thursday morning commute.<\/p>\n

Busch told Metro that there is no indication that the derailment was caused by high temperatures. SEPTA lowers top train speeds during heat waves.<\/p>\n

The derailment happened hours after a CSX freight train crashed<\/a>\u00a0near the Neshaminy Falls Train Station in Bensalem, causing extensive damage. The freight tracks run parallel to SEPTA\u2019s West Trenton Line, though the authority\u2019s rails were not impacted. Service was halted to allow for an emergency response but ultimately resumed Tuesday night, Busch said.<\/p>\n
