SCRANTON \u2014 With an extreme heat warning in effect amid high temperatures, Lackawanna County Commissioner Thom Welby noted Wednesday a number of \u201ccooling centers\u201d throughout the county where residents can beat the heat.<\/p>\n
The cooling centers, which the county also highlighted on Facebook, are located at various senior community centers and the Jewish Community Center of Scranton. While a number of the senior centers are usually open on Fridays, officials said in the Facebook post that they\u2019ll be closed this Friday ahead of Independence Day.<\/p>\n
Cooling center locations include:<\/p>\n
Scranton Senior Community Center: 1004 Jackson St., open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
Fallbrook Senior Community Center: 185 Fallbrook St., Carbondale, open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
Mid Valley Senior Community Center: 310 Church St., Jessup, open Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
Hillside Senior Community Center: 1151 Winola Road, Clarks Summit, open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
Dunmore Senior Community Center: 1414 Monroe Ave., open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
North Pocono Senior Community Center: 6 John J. Michaels Drive, Covington Twp., open Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.<\/p>\n
Taylor Senior Community Center: 700 S. Main St., open Monday through Wednesday from noon to 3 p.m.<\/p>\n
Throop Senior Community Center: 500 Sanderson St., open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.<\/p>\n
JCC of Scranton: 601 Jefferson Ave., open Monday through Thursday from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.<\/p>\n
The JCC will be open Friday and available for those seeking respite from the heat, Executive Director Dan Cardonick confirmed.<\/p>\n
The National Weather Service issued the extreme heat warning for Lackawanna, Luzerne and several other Northeast Pennsylvania counties, noting \u201cdangerously hot conditions with maximum heat index values from 100 to 110 (Wednesday) afternoon and Thursday afternoon and from 95 to 105 Friday afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n
The warning is in effect until 8 p.m. Friday.<\/p>\n
Residents should stay hydrated, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and try to limit strenuous activity to early morning or evening, per the National Weather Service.
