The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued an advisory for a harmful algal bloom Status at Blue Marsh Lake.<\/p>\n
The announcement Wednesday, which updates the previous \u201cwatch status,\u201d is due to the presence of moderate levels of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, in the lake and the potential for harmful toxins to be present.<\/p>\n
Visitors are advised to be alert for harmful algal bloom signs and symptoms, such as extremely discolored water, and to avoid contact with discolored water or scum.<\/p>\n
Weekly testing of the swim beach so far has not the presence of toxins so the area remains open for use.<\/p>\n
However, officials said, those conditions can change rapidly and visitors should always check water conditions for the signs and symptoms of a harmful algal bloom before recreating.<\/p>\n
To protect yourself, your family, and your pets from blue-green algae blooms:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Avoid water contact in areas where the water is discolored or where you see foam, scum, or mats of algae on the water\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Children and pets are especially susceptible to the harmful effects of the toxins produced by blue-green algae. Do not allow children or pets to play in or drink scummy water.<\/p>\n
\u2022 If you have contact with water that might contain harmful cyanobacteria, rinse off with fresh water as soon as possible afterwards.<\/p>\n
