NORRISTOWN \u2014 A Wyndmoor man was sent to prison for his role in multiple armed robberies, including the robbery of a Kohl\u2019s store in Limerick Township, which was thwarted by an off-duty Lower Merion Township detective.<\/p>\n
Von Ian Curry, 21, of the unit block of Biddlewoods Road in the Wyndmoor section of Springfield Township, was sentenced in Montgomery County Court to 6 to 15 years in a state correctional facility in connection with three armed robberies between Dec. 21 and Dec. 22, 2024, including the thwarted Kohl\u2019s holdup.<\/p>\n
Judge William R. Carpenter imposed the sentence after Curry pleaded guilty to charges of robbery, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and carrying a firearm without a license in connection with the incidents.<\/p>\n
Assistant District Attorney Blair Rohlfing sought a lengthy prison term for Curry.<\/p>\n
\u201cState prison was appropriate given the number of offenses and the severity of the offenses and the number of people who were endangered,\u201d said Rohlfing, referring to the trauma the victims suffered during the holdups at the targeted businesses.<\/p>\n
Some victims indicated they feel unsafe when they encounter strangers in public and others said they couldn\u2019t return to work after the holdups.<\/p>\n
Specifically, Curry was charged in connection with several robberies, including: a Dec. 21, 2024, armed holdup at a Fine Wine & Good Spirits store on Bethlehem Pike in Springfield Township during which he fled with $900; a Dec. 22, 2024, armed robbery at the Boscov\u2019s store in North Coventry during which he fled with $3,669; and the Dec. 22, 2024, attempted holdup at the Kohl\u2019s store on South Township Line Road in Limerick.<\/p>\n
A second man, Zaire Tyler Ransom-Nelson, 31, of Chester, who was the lookout during the Kohl\u2019s robbery, was convicted by a jury in April of charges of robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, simple assault and false identification to law enforcement, in connection with that incident and is awaiting sentencing.<\/p>\n
The Kohl\u2019s incident unfolded at about 8:08 p.m. Dec. 22 during the Christmas shopping season.<\/p>\n
Lower Merion Detective James Black, who was off duty and shopping with his family at Kohl\u2019s, notified Limerick police that he observed a suspicious vehicle circling the Kohl\u2019s parking lot several times. Black told the dispatcher that he observed two males stop their dark-colored Audi several times, get out of the car and get back in, and that they were wearing all black clothing and purple rubber gloves, according to authorities.<\/p>\n
Black observed the pair enter the store and split up at the cash registers, and intuitively knew a robbery was about to occur, authorities alleged.<\/p>\n
Before taking action on his own, Black notified police dispatchers and then entered the store. Once in the store, Black observed one of the suspects, Curry, point a handgun at a cashier while demanding money, while the other suspect, Ransom-Nelson, stood at the back of the checkout line to act as a lookout.<\/p>\n
Numerous customers were waiting in the checkout lines and ran for cover, authorities said.<\/p>\n
Authorities said Black drew his own firearm, identified himself as a police officer and ordered Curry to put down the gun and get on the floor, according to court documents.<\/p>\n
As Black grabbed Curry\u2019s hand, Curry dropped his handgun on the counter but then took off running from the store with Ransom-Nelson, according to arrest documents.<\/p>\n
By that time, numerous responding patrol units from multiple jurisdictions had arrived and were in place. Police saturated the area and Curry and Ransom-Nelson were quickly apprehended.<\/p>\n
Defense lawyer Keir Bradford-Grey represented Curry during the court proceedings.<\/p>\n
In May, Black received a commendation for heroism for thwarting the Kohl\u2019s robbery. While presenting the commendation, District Attorney Kevin R.
