Erie firefighters faced extreme heat conditions Thursday while battling a residential structure fire on the city’s east side.<\/p>\n
In a Facebook post the department stated that at approximately 12:45 p.m., third platoon crews were dispatched to a house fire at 2404 Perry Street. Responding units included Engines 13, 8, 12, 6, and 11, along with Tower 2, DC323, Fire Investigator 1, and the K-9 Unit.<\/p>\n
Firefighters worked in challenging conditions as high temperatures combined with the intense heat generated by the fire. Crews were able to bring the blaze under control while ensuring all residents safely evacuated the home.<\/p>\n
Several family pets also escaped the residence, though two animals tragically perished in the fire. In a positive outcome, a number of pets made it out on their own, while Erie Fire Department personnel successfully rescued two ferrets from inside the home. One of the ferrets required oxygen treatment at the scene before being transported by Erie Animal Enforcement to The ANNA Shelter for further care.<\/p>\n
During firefighting operations, one firefighter was injured and had been treated at the scene before being transported by EmergyCare to UPMC Hamot. After receiving medical attention, the firefighter was released later that evening and is recovering at home.<\/p>\n
The cause of the fire has not been released.
