Dozens of inmates at the Erie County Corrections Facility in Alden had to be moved within the prison after an air handler failed.<\/p>\n
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office, which manages county jails, said in a statement that 65 incarcerated people at the county jail in Alden had to be moved to different cells after the issue left 96 cells unusable, according to a news release from the agency.<\/p>\n
Those cells will not be used until the issue is fixed. The development brings the total number of unusable cells between the jail and the Erie County Holding Center in downtown Buffalo to 241. The Sheriff’s Office has also seen an increase from 717 to 760 incarcerated people in the last two weeks, further straining the sheriff’s ability to properly house inmates, according to the release.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is yet another constraint on my already strained classification team,\u201d Sheriff John Garcia said. \u201cWith 241 cells unavailable, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to assign incarcerated individuals to appropriate units, while still honoring the necessary classification requirements. We are quite simply running out of available places to house our population.\u201d<\/p>\n
