PITTSBURGH \u2014 A local bakery is celebrating more than just American independence. Mancini\u2019s Bread is hitting a huge milestone: 100 years in business.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just like a proud moment that I get to be a part of it and recognize the hard work of everyone who\u2019s worked here,\u201d Nick Mancini said. \u201cAll the generations in my family.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nick now runs the operation with his mom, Mary.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think about this bakery being 100 years old and that\u2019s only a little more than 20 years older than I am,\u201d Mary said. \u201cIt\u2019s always been a part of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n
So how has Mancini\u2019s stayed a Pittsburgh staple for so long?<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s the product. And we\u2019ve had good people,\u201d added Mary.<\/p>\n
The bakery started 100 years ago with one man, Mary\u2019s uncle and Nick\u2019s great-uncle.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe mixed the bread, scaled it, shaped it, probed it, baked it, bagged it and then went out and sold it. So roughly 100 loaves a night. And he did that for a long time,\u201d said Nick.<\/p>\n
From that great-uncle to Mary\u2019s father and now Mary and Nick, those 100 loaves a day have turned into so many more. Plus, there\u2019s the famous Mancini\u2019s twist.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey will always be hand-twisted,\u201d Nick said proudly while showing WPXI, in less than 20 seconds, how easy it is to fold. Maybe for Nick.<\/p>\n
No worries because Mancini\u2019s plans to make its twists for the next 100 years, all while innovating and embracing technology to bring us the bread our families have loved for a full century.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs the person carrying the torch, I feel like I\u2019m the innovator,\u201d Nick said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m going to help bring the bakery into the 21st century and make sure that I\u2019m here to pass it on to my kids. So I would love to go another 100 years.<\/p>\n
