<\/p>\nDUNMORE \u2014 A Scranton company still plans to create a campground with five cabins near the Interstate 84\/380 twin bridges and the new flyover exit ramp for Elmhurst Twp.<\/p>\n
The Dunmore Zoning Board on April 24, 2025, approved a special exception for the campground proposed by S. Walsh Properties LLC at Silver Lake.<\/p>\n
Company owner Shawn Walsh said he waited to proceed with his plan while the state Department of Transportation was rebuilding the bridges and using a dead-end section of Drinker Turnpike for access to the highway construction site abutting his campground land.<\/p>\n
With those projects completed, he hopes to have construction on a campground start in spring 2027.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s in full progress right now,\u201d Walsh said of his campground plan.<\/p>\n
The Silver Lake site is nestled in a valley between the twin bridges and Route 435.<\/p>\n
Starting in 2020, PennDOT first rebuilt one of the twin bridges and then did the other one. The bridge project was completed in December.\n<\/p>\n
In 2024, PennDOT also completed construction of a new flyover exit ramp of I-84\/380 to Route 435, which reconfigured the exit for Elmhurst from a left-lane exit to a right-lane exit.<\/p>\n
The twin bridges and flyover overlook the campground site in an adjacent valley.<\/p>\n
The campground plan approved by the borough calls for construction of five one-room cabins at Silver Lake. The site is in a small conservation district under the borough\u2019s zoning and the camping and cabins are allowed in that district.<\/p>\n
The cabins would be akin to a \u201cglamping\u201d-style operation, meaning more of an upscale camping experience, a borough official had said at the time of the zoning approval.<\/p>\n
The twin bridges carry traffic over the Lackawanna County Trail Corridor and the abandoned Erie & Wyoming Railroad bridge, both near the campground site. The PennDOT twin bridges project also included rehabilitation of the railroad bridge for future integration into the trail system.<\/p>\n
Work on the old rail bridge also recently was completed and the trail and rail bridge are open to pedestrian traffic, PennDOT spokeswoman Jessica Ruddy said. But the section of the trail that extends under the twin bridges is closed to pedestrian traffic, because a contractor is currently working in that area regrading and stabilizing slopes and planting trees, Ruddy said.<\/p>\n
