A CSX freight train derailed in Bensalem Township on Tuesday afternoon around 2 PM near East Bristol Road and Grove Avenue by the Neshaminy Falls Train Station with at least 13 cars coming off the tracks and hazmat teams responding because Bucks County Emergency Management is classifying this as a hazardous materials incident.<\/p>\n

No injuries have been reported so far but residents in the area are being told to go inside immediately, close all windows, doors, and vents, turn off their air conditioning, and shelter in place until further notice because officials haven\u2019t identified exactly what\u2019s in the train cars yet and are still assessing the situation.<\/p>\n

Freight Train Derailed in Bensalem Township<\/a><\/p>\n

#BREAKING<\/a> A freight train derailed in Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania, prompting a local shelter-in-place order. <\/p>\n

At least 5 to 10 cars are off the tracks between Street Road and the Neshaminy Falls train station. <\/p>\n

Hazmat teams are actively responding to evaluate the stability\u2026<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the part that caught my attention though. <\/p>\n

Officials haven\u2019t revealed what material the train was carrying but they did warn residents that \u201cpossible exposure may cause difficulty breathing, loss of coordination and a burning sensation in the eyes, nose, throat or lungs.\u201d<\/p>\n

I see news reporters out there trying to play it cool like nothing is wrong but who knows? Are we just going to trust public officials because that definitely doesn\u2019t sound great.<\/p>\n

In fact that sounds pretty fucking terrible and the casual way that warning was included in the official statement like it was a side note rather than the most important sentence in the entire press release is kind of wild. <\/p>\n

Any time I\u2019m reading \u201cdifficulty breathing and loss of coordination,\u201d its hard to consider that a minor inconvenience, right? Seems like more of a thing that should probably be in bold at the top of every notification going out to people who live within a mile of this derailment.<\/p>\n

They basically told residents of Bensalem \u201chey, we don\u2019t know what\u2019s in the train cars but if you breathe the air outside you might lose the ability to coordinate your body and your lungs might feel like they\u2019re on fire, so maybe close your windows and stay inside for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sick. I actually work up here. Can\u2019t be good!<\/p>\n

Bristol Road is closed between Brownsville Road and Old Lincoln Highway, a staging area has been set up at the Neshaminy Mall, SEPTA suspended service on the West Trenton Line even though they don\u2019t use those specific tracks, and Chopper 6 footage showed at least 10 cars visibly derailed from the air.<\/p>\n

Police, firefighters, medics, and hazmat teams are all on scene and nobody has said what caused the derailment or given any timeline for when residents can stop sheltering in place and open their windows again.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re in the Bensalem area, stay inside, keep everything closed, don\u2019t run your AC, and wait for the all-clear because whatever is in those train cars is apparently bad enough that the county is treating this like a hazmat situation and warning people about respiratory symptoms before they even know what the chemical is.<\/p>\n

Hopefully this gets resolved quickly without anyone getting hurt and the hazmat teams figure out what they\u2019re dealing with before the wind shifts and carries whatever is leaking from those cars into the city of Philadelphia. <\/p>\n
