MADISON, Wis. — A season where nearly everything has gone right for the Madison Night Mares just hit a hurdle.<\/p>\n
Night Mares head coach Lexi Godwin is leaving Madison to become an assistant coach for the University of Pittsburgh. She had previously served as a graduate assistant at the\u00a0University of Oklahoma during the collegiate softball season.<\/p>\n
“My gratitude goes out to Sam, Vern, and the entire Night Mares organization for giving me the opportunity to begin my coaching career in Madison,” Godwin said. “Although I am stepping away to pursue my dreams, my love and full support will stay with this coaching staff and group of girls.”<\/p>\n
Godwin departs as the winningest head coach in Northwoods League Softball history with 57 victories and a\u00a0Northwoods League Softball Championship. After setting a benchmark with 35 regular season wins last year, the Night Mares are on track to beat that record and are currently 20-1.<\/p>\n
Replacing Godwin will be Kara Hammock, who excelled as a pitcher for North Carolina-Wilmington before exploding onto the national stage as a member of the Florida Gators’ pitching staff last year.<\/p>\n
“Lexi has worked so hard the past two summers to establish a strong foundation for this program,” Hammock said. “I am excited to continue to help grow and support these girls and their careers, not only on the field, but off.”<\/p>\n
The Night Mares won’t have much time to adjust to their new coaching structure. They’re back in action at 6:35 p.m. Monday night on the road against the La Crosse Steam.<\/p>\n
