WYOMING, LUZERNE CO. (WOLF) — The 148th annual commemorative service for the Battle and Massacre of Wyoming brought people to the Wyoming Monument on Saturday to honor those killed in one of the deadliest battles of the Revolutionary War.

The ceremony marked the 248th anniversary of the July 3, 1778, battle, when hundreds of American defenders were killed in the Wyoming Valley.

The battle began after American forces gathered at the Fort of Forty, in present-day Forty Fort, after learning their homes could be attacked. Historical accounts cited by the Luzerne County Historical Society say loyalist forces faked a retreat, drawing the Americans into a trap.

More than 300 of roughly 400 American fighters were killed, and the Wyoming Valley surrendered to the British the next day, on July 4, 1778. The Wyoming Monument was later built to honor those killed and serve as a final resting place for soldiers’ remains. Local women helped raise the money needed to complete it.

Saturday’s service included patriotic music from the Wyoming Valley Band, remarks from local leaders, floral tributes at the monument and a volley tribute by the 24th Connecticut Militia. An honor guard from the 28th Division Artillery also carried flags during the ceremony.

Chris Pearl, professor of history at Lycoming College, delivered the keynote address, titled “Whose Ground, Whose Independence? Remembering Wyoming on the Fourth of July.” Pearl said his speech examined how the ideals behind the Declaration of Independence continue to be tested to this day.

“The Declaration of Independence is important in terms of its intent and its aspirations, but it took risks, uncertainty and action after that declaration to achieve. This monument represents that, but as we gather here today to remember and to share stories, we’re also part of that ongoing reality,” Pearl said.

Saturday’s service continued that tradition of remembrance, bringing together music, historical reflection and ceremonial tributes at the monument nearly two and a half centuries after the battle.

WYOMING, LUZERNE CO.
