Friday, July 10, at 9 p.m. <\/a><\/p>\nIs any local steel being used in the new Commercial Street Bridge? <\/p>\n
The new bridge is a massive structure, weighing over 22 million pounds, or 11,000 tons. <\/p>\n
Fay S&B Construction, which has been instrumental in the project, reported that the construction required 7.4 million pounds of steel and nearly 12,000 cubic yards of concrete. <\/p>\n
“We don’t make steel like we used to here. So no, the steel did not come from Pittsburgh,” said PennDOT District 11 executive Jason Zang. <\/p>\n
However, he added, “I do believe the concrete is being made here from local vendors. The reinforcing bars are probably all locally fabricated. But a lot of it… a lot of the materials are not sourced locally here.” <\/p>\n
Zang also highlighted that many of the workers involved in the project are from Pittsburgh. <\/p>\n
“They’ve been doing innovative things around Pittsburgh for a long time, and we’re continuing that, and I’m proud to be a part of it,” Zang said.<\/p>\n
