When it comes to coffee, my go-to order is an iced vanilla or salted caramel latte. But I’m always down to try a drink from the seasonal menu. In fact, that’s how I discovered one of my favorite combinations. A couple of years ago, my sister-in-law and her wife took us to a place in Philadelphia that was doing miso caramel lattes \u2014 and wow, was it good.<\/p>\n
White miso<\/a> in coffee is so wildly delicious. When it’s paired with caramel it gives salted caramel vibes, but with more depth. I was inspired to try it myself when I got home, but I don’t usually have caramel sauce at home \u2014 so I added a splash of maple syrup for that hit of sweetness instead. Together, miso and maple syrup boost my typical morning coffee.<\/p>\n Credit: Micki Wagner<\/p>\n Why White Miso Is the Perfect Addition to Coffee<\/p>\n If you like salty-sweet flavors, white miso is a must-try in your coffee. It offers a little bit of saltiness, as well as umami because it’s been fermented. The result is a rich, slightly salty flavor that pairs so well with sweet maple syrup and bitter coffee. (You can learn about the difference between different types of miso here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n Amazon<\/p>\n I usually use Trader Joe’s White Miso Paste (I love the squeezable pouch it comes in), but you can also get white miso for $10 on Amazon<\/a>. The Fusion Select brand is a popular choice, with shoppers having bought more than 3,000 pouches in the past month alone. It has an ingredient list you’d expect for white miso: soybeans, rice, salt, and water. And while I use miso primarily for adding some oomph to my coffee, it’s also great in miso soup<\/a>, miso caramel cookies<\/a>, and even in chili<\/a>.<\/p>\n Credit: Micki Wagner<\/p>\n How to Make My White Miso Coffee<\/p>\n I start by adding to a mug 1 teaspoon white miso paste<\/a> and 1 tablespoon maple syrup (I also use the Trader Joe’s brand for this, but you can use whatever you prefer; Amazon has some good maple syrups<\/a> you can grab while picking up your white miso paste). Then I brew my coffee right into that mug. Even though my coffee machine has an iced function, I want to brew it hot at first so the miso paste and maple syrup meld into the coffee better.<\/p>\n After that’s all mixed together, I add it to a cup with ice and top it off with a splash of unsweetened vanilla almond milk. The flavor that comes through the most here is the white miso. That salty-umami flavor is just so satisfying. For all my salted caramel fans, you have to give this a try in your next latte.
