{"id":240051,"date":"2026-07-10T09:21:24","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T09:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/240051\/"},"modified":"2026-07-10T09:21:24","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T09:21:24","slug":"wurds-freedom-journeys-highlights-250-historical-black-figures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/240051\/","title":{"rendered":"WURD\u2019s \u2018Freedom Journeys\u2019 highlights 250 historical Black figures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From Philly and the Pa. suburbs to South Jersey and Delaware, what would you like WHYY News to cover? <a href=\"#Section1\">Let us know!<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>WURD Radio LLC is commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence by recognizing 250 black Philadelphians who have made a historic impact through a yearlong initiative called <a href=\"https:\/\/wurdradio.com\/freedomjourneys\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cFreedom Journeys.\u201d<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is our effort to really amplify the black contributions to Philadelphia,\u201d said Sara Lomax, president and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/wurdradio.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">WURD Radio<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>Lomax said this project takes a focused look at historical and contemporary black trailblazers who have significantly contributed to the foundation of the city and country from 1776 to 2026.\n<\/p>\n<p>The project began as the brainchild of Renee Chenault-Fattah, the executive director of the city\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/departments\/philadelphia-commission-on-human-relations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Commission on Human Relations<\/a>. She created a list of various individuals, reaching out to Lomax and WURD to be involved as a media partner.\n  <\/p>\n<p>When Chenault-Fattah started her role with Mayor Cherelle L. Parker\u2019s administration in 2025, she gave full production control to WURD to bring the idea to life. WURD then partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/lovenowmedia.com\/about\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Love Now Media<\/a> to take point for the video and audio production elements for the project.\n<\/p>\n<p>The ever-building list of prominent Philadelphians began from Chenault-Fattah\u2019s initial list of roughly 100 to 150 people. Building on that, WURD and Love Now Media continued to research, searching for the impactful individuals, while also involving the community.\n<\/p>\n<p>Through their website, people are welcome to <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSc-BHh1Qdt9Rmf9-_0SzJx2fgx16fvEC2iZlaTuKeWGLPYWeA\/viewform\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nominate people<\/a> who they believe qualify for being featured in the project.
