Reading police seized dozens of fireworks display boxes and more than 30 pounds of mortar shells during a Fourth of July enforcement sweep that city officials say is essential to preventing fires and injuries in the city’s densely packed neighborhoods.

Reading police ran a dedicated illegal‑fireworks detail over the holiday period, responding to 69 incidents and confiscating a large haul of prohibited items.

According to the city, officers seized roughly 60 prepackaged display boxes, 25 pounds of 3‑inch mortar shells, 5 pounds of 2‑inch mortar shells, 2 pounds of linked firecrackers and about 40 bottle rockets and Roman candles.

City officials noted that Chapter 225 of Reading’s Code of Ordinances prohibits the use of fireworks—including aerial fireworks—anywhere in the city except for permitted public displays. The annual enforcement effort is designed to curb illegal use that can spark fires or cause injuries in tightly built row-home neighborhoods.

Officials said the Reading Fire Department responded to 12 fireworks‑related calls during the holiday period.

One incident involved a device fired at a vacant building, igniting the front entrance and causing a small fire. Firefighters quickly contained it, limiting damage to the doorway.

Mayor Eddie Moran praised first responders.

“Illegal fireworks put lives, homes, businesses, and neighborhoods at risk,” Moran said in the city’s announcement of the enforcement effort. “Every year, our police and fire departments work tirelessly to enforce our ordinance, respond to emergencies, and help prevent tragedies before they happen.”

City officials stressed that the fireworks ordinance is intended to reduce the risk of fires, injuries and property damage. Residents are encouraged to celebrate responsibly and report violations to the Reading Police Department’s nonemergency line, 610-655-4911; emergencies should be reported to 911.

Reading police seized dozens of fireworks display boxes and more than 30 pounds of mortar shells during a…

[11
349,202,182,139,28,736,128,130,129,706
post-240201","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-reading","tag-berks-county","tag-crime-and-public-safety","tag-local-news","tag-news","tag-pennsylvania","tag-reading","tag-reading-city","tag-reading-city-headlines","tag-reading-city-news","tag-top-stories-reg
["GET
