DUNMORE, Pa. — Starting college can bring a mix of excitement and nerves, and student leaders play a key role in helping first-year students navigate that transition. As part of Penn State Scranton’s efforts to welcome the class of 2030, it is introducing its New Student Orientation (NSO) Program leaders through a series of Q&As.

Orientation leader Grant Olsen

Grant Olsen is a fourth-year student majoring in Information Science Technology, specifically the Application Development Option.

Q: Why did you choose Penn State Scranton?

Olsen: I chose Penn State Scranton because not only was it the closest campus to me, but I also chose Penn State specifically because I hear nothing but good things from the campuses as a whole.

Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to new students?

Olsen: My advice to new Penn State students would be to make use of every resource available to you. Your tuition pays for more than just attending classes, so make use of the resources Penn State offers that you pay for.

Q: Why should new students get involved on campus?

Olsen: New students getting involved on campus not only helps you meet new people, but it also allows you to pave the way to new opportunities in the future that you might have otherwise not known about.

Q: What’s one must-have item or life hack for surviving your first year of college?

Olsen: The secret to surviving your first year in college is a notebook. Having one specifically for noting down important dates, new people you meet, and listing assignments makes the first year of college a walk in the park.

Q: What’s been your favorite Penn State Scranton memory so far?

Olsen: My fondest memory at Penn State Scranton was becoming the president for a club. While I only did so for a year, that year marked a changing point in how I approach people and problems that come up.

Q: How has being an NSO Leader impacted your college experience?

Olsen: Being an NSO leader has given me the second chance I needed to complete my internship for my major. Without becoming an NSO leader and getting involved, I would have had to take up to a year of extra time to get my degree.

Q: What’s one thing you wish you knew before starting college?

Olsen: Before starting college, I wish I knew just how isolating it can be getting started. College is often a whole new group of people for most, and getting involved quickly helps with feeling less isolated.
