A local faith-based coalition held its monthly vigil today, focused on supporting immigrants, migrants and refugees.<\/p>\n
Outside the Erie Federal Courthouse, you could feel the energy of people coming together, with organizers trying to offer calm during a time of concern for immigrants and refugees nationwide.<\/p>\n
“I don’t think most of them are lawbreakers. Most of them are not violent. They’re just families looking for a better life, and that’s why we need an immigration system that goes by the rule of law, that they go to court and find out if they are worthy to be here. If they have no criminal record, if they’re just a family, then they should be given the help they need.” Karen Groucutt, an attendee shared.<\/p>\n
Friday’s vigil was organized by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania. Dozens gathered under the theme “You Are Not Alone.”<\/p>\n
Multiple speakers confirmed at least three people have been taken by ICE in Meadville over the last 10 days.<\/p>\n
Along with prayer, there was a song to accompany the vigil, meant to give families strength at home and nationwide.<\/p>\n
“While the vigil is quick, organizers say the impact can last much longer, because for immigrant families, simply seeing people show up can be the reminder they’re not facing anything alone.” Stephanie Logue reported.<\/p>\n
“Our presence matters. We can’t ask our friends, our immigrant friends, to be here because it may not be safe for them to be here, but they can see that we are supporting them and praying for them and working together.” Deb Seng, a Social Justice Coordinator for Sisters of Saint Joseph shard.<\/p>\n
Organizers say these vigils will continue, not just as a show of solidarity, but as a reminder that families affected by immigration enforcement are not alone.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the past week, more than four members of our community have been detained by immigration enforcement in the Meadville area. We know that at least one of those detained has an active asylum case currently pending. Another has a spouse who is pregnant, with their baby due in just a few months.\u201d<\/p>\n
