Philadelphia’s Thomas Jefferson University<\/a>\u00a0is expanding its medical school\u00a0in the Lehigh Valley region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The university’s Sidney Kimmel Medical College plans to build a new 54K SF academic facility in downtown Allentown<\/a>, it\u00a0announced Monday<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The school aims to open the campus in 2029 with an inaugural class of 45 students. It will offer the same curriculum as its Philadelphia campus, and students will complete clinical training at hospitals and outpatient facilities in the Lehigh Valley<\/a>\u00a0region.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The medical school also announced an expansion in Delaware<\/a>\u00a0last month, a partnership with Gov. Matt Meyer’s administration to launch the state’s first four-year medical school.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the expansion of Sidney Kimmel Medical College into the Lehigh Valley and Delaware, and the continued growth of our academic and clinical programs, this is a time of tremendous opportunity,\u201d TJU President\u00a0Susan C. Aldridge said in a release. \u201cThese initiatives reflect our commitment to address critical workforce needs while building sustainable academic pathways for future healthcare professionals.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n

Several elected officials\u00a0released statements framing the expansion as a way to\u00a0improve access to medical care across the Lehigh Valley and spur related economic activity.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a win for our region and will keep Allentown as a hub for life sciences innovation,\u201d state Rep. Peter Schweyer said in\u00a0the university’s press release.\u00a0<\/p>\n

TJU also operates the largest health system in the Philadelphia region, Jefferson Health<\/a>, which has 33 hospital campuses across Pennsylvania\u00a0and New Jersey. In 2024, it bought\u00a0Lehigh Valley Health Network to expand its network in that region,\u00a0the\u00a0Philadelphia Business Journal reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Philadelphia’s Temple University<\/a> is also growing its medical footprint.
