{"id":24347,"date":"2025-11-04T14:32:16","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T14:32:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/24347\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T14:32:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T14:32:16","slug":"nonpartisan-student-organizations-invite-civil-dialogue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-pa\/24347\/","title":{"rendered":"Nonpartisan student organizations invite civil dialogue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Student organizations at Pitt are working to foster civil, nonpartisan dialogue amid rising concerns over campus polarization.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following Pitt\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/pittnews.com\/article\/197549\/featured\/pitt-scores-its-lowest-ranking-in-annual-free-speech-report\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">failing grade<\/a> in the 2026 FIRE College Free Speech Ranking, <a href=\"https:\/\/pittnews.com\/article\/198317\/featured\/judged-and-uncomfortable-students-ignited-by-decline-in-free-speech-ranking\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">students<\/a> called for the University to encourage more civil political discourse across campus. Clubs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/bridgepittsburgh\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">BridgePittsburgh<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/syscapitt\/\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Stuff You Should Care About<\/a> are working to make political conversations more approachable and informed regardless of party affiliation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>BridgePittsburgh, Pitt\u2019s chapter of <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgeusa.org\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=1695275022\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bridge USA<\/a>, is a nonpartisan organization for students seeking meaningful political discussion without hostility. Cole Belling, BridgePittsburgh\u2019s president and a senior politics and philosophy major, said the organization isn\u2019t affiliated with a party, \u201cbut we\u2019re also not centrist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe try to bring everyone together. It\u2019s not about, \u2018You have to agree with people,\u2019\u201d Belling said. \u201cIt\u2019s about how you can disagree with them civilly.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Pronesti, vice president of BridgePittsburgh and senior political science major, said the organization welcomes all levels of participation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBridge[Pittsburgh] is about creating a space where people from all over, from all different backgrounds, can come together and talk about politics in a way that is safe, respectful and, at the end of the day, educational,\u201d Pronesti said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a respectful back-and-forth dialogue in 2022 about now-President Donald Trump with a classmate in a politically focused class, Pronesti was encouraged to join the club. Three years later, Pronesti credits the organization with teaching her how to separate personal emotions from political discussions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learned how to fight the battles I needed to fight and stand on the morals I needed to stand on,\u201d Pronesti said. \u201cYou have to be able to take yourself out of the conversation to talk about the core issues.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While BridgePittsburgh focuses on facilitating dialogue, SYSCA, another campus nonpartisan club that advocates for fact-based discussions, aims to provide students with unbiased, verifiable information.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Herron, SYSCA\u2019s social media manager and a sophomore political science and psychology major, said that the club was born from the realization that many students are still \u201cunsure of how the government, and certain roles within it, works.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[SYSCA] realized there\u2019s a problem on campus \u2014 too many students are affected by misinformation about politics,\u201d Herron said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Founded in October 2024, SYSCA implements a three-step bias check for all of the content it publishes. The organization relies heavily on the <a href=\"https:\/\/app.adfontesmedia.com\/chart\/interactive?utm_source=adfontesmedia&amp;utm_medium=website\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ad Fontes media bias chart<\/a> to identify sources that rank high in reliability and low in partisan lean, according to Herron.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolitics is just part of the world we live in,\u201d Herron said. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to make that world a little less confusing for everybody, so that they can understand how different government decisions might affect their day-to-day life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SYSCA conducts man-on-the-street interviews with students, posts informative Instagram graphics on current topics and hosts tabling events at the Petersen Events Center and Towers Lobby. During these interviews, Herron found that many students don\u2019t have enough foundational political information to begin forming questions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll ask students, \u2018What do you have a question relating to politics?\u2019\u201d Herron said. \u201cThey\u2019ll be like, \u2018I\u2019m not really too sure. I don\u2019t know anything about politics that I could form a question off of.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pronesti cited \u201cpolitical exhaustion\u201d and \u201cthe dismissive nature of politics\u201d as two factors that push students away from current political involvement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernment and politics is made to seem like an elusive concept,\u201d Pronesti said, \u201cI think people are exhausted by feeling like, \u2018If you don\u2019t get it by now, you won\u2019t get it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By encouraging open, judgment-free conversations, both SYSCA and BridgePittsburgh hope to remind students that political engagement doesn\u2019t have to mean picking \u201ca side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of students are like, \u2018I don\u2019t really have a side,\u2019\u201d Pronesti said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to fall under a label.
