Local and state officials on Monday celebrated the opening of a limited-access ramp off the Pennsylvania Turnpike (Interstate 276)<\/a>, connecting the Fort Washington (Route 309) Interchange directly to the Greater Fort Washington District at Commerce Drive.<\/p>\n

The Fort Washington Zip Ramp is designed to improve mobility, reduce congestion and enhance access throughout the area as part of Upper Dublin Township’s decade-long effort to transform the former Fort Washington Office Park into a mixed-use destination.<\/p>\n

Since 2016, nearly $45 million has been invested into the Greater Fort Washington District’s infrastructure, with almost 70% of funding coming from grants and partners including the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development and Montgomery County.<\/p>\n

“Today is a milestone event for Upper Dublin,” said Kurt M. Ferguson, Municipal Authority<\/a> executive director for Montgomery’s Upper Dublin Township. “This project and the previous projects have seen a remarkable return of investment in the Greater Fort Washington District, including TruMark Financial’s strong and unwavering support of this ramp and the Fort Washington area, LifeTime Fitness selecting their site just beyond the ramp on Commerce Drive, and property owners reinvesting in their properties to reaffirm their presence in Upper Dublin.”<\/p>\n

The new off-ramp was made possible by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission<\/a>‘s 2025 transition to Open Road Tolling, a cashless, free-flowing mode of collecting tolls without traditional toll plazas or toll booths.<\/p>\n

Since 2000, the turnpike has added four new access points, but officials said the new tolling system makes it easier to continue adding access points to communities.<\/p>\n

Upper Dublin Township created the Municipal Authority in 2016, representing 134 properties within the former Fort Washington Office Park. The opening of the zip ramp marks a milestone recognized as one of the founding projects that inspired the authority’s creation.<\/p>\n

Montgomery County contributed over a half million dollars in funding toward the zip ramp. The project was part of a 2015 county study that identified destination centers that would benefit from effective access points to the Pennsylvania Turnpike.<\/p>\n
