William Reynolds in <a href=\"https:\/\/thebrownandwhite.com\/2025\/05\/26\/mayor-reynolds-defeats-councilwoman-crampsie-smith-for-bethlehem-mayor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the mayoral election<\/a>. Incumbents Rachel Leon and Hillary Kwiatek are both seeking another term, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lehighvalleylive.com\/elections\/2025\/10\/what-to-know-about-bethlehem-city-council-candidates-ahead-of-nov-4-election-armchair-lehigh-valley.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lehigh Valley Live<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Brown and White reached out to all candidates running for Bethlehem City Council. For those who declined or didn\u2019t respond to\u00a0 interview requests, public information about their campaigns was compiled.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Justin Amann<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Justin Amann, a lifelong Bethlehem resident and Democrat, is the executive director of the Foundation for the Bethlehem Area School District.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The grandson of a Bethlehem Steel Factory worker and\u00a0 father of two Bethlehem public school students, Amann said his roots in the community shape his approach to public service.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIt\u2019s so much more salient when you run for an office where your family is growing up,\u201d Amann said. \u201cYou want to make sure you\u2019re making the place an even better place to live for your kids than you had growing up for yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If elected, Amann said his priorities include supporting first responders to ensure public safety, maintaining infrastructure such as\u00a0 roads and parks, and promoting economic growth while preserving the character of Bethlehem\u2019s neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He said affordable housing is a pressing issue and called for a balance between rental options and affordable owner-occupied homes.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Amann describes himself as a proud Democrat, but said the party has lost its way in talking about the working class. He said it\u2019s time for the government to start focusing more on the people.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He said he\u2019s eager to see residents vote and hopes those who didn\u2019t support him will hold him accountable if elected.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jo Daniels<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jo Daniels, a lifelong Bethlehem resident, is running for her first term on City Council as a Democratic candidate, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcall.com\/2025\/05\/05\/bethlehem-city-council-election-jo-daniels\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Morning Call<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Daniels said she hopes to create a \u201cfair and balanced\u201d housing environment that promotes landlord-tenant education and responsible development while preserving neighborhood character. Her father, the late Walter Baker Daniels Jr., was Bethlehem\u2019s first Black firefighter, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lehighvalleynews.com\/elections\/daughter-of-bethlehems-first-black-firefighter-announces-candidacy-for-city-council\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lehigh Valley News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to her campaign\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/p\/Jo-Daniels-for-Bethlehem-City-Council-61574851991418\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a> page, Daniels began attending City Council meetings and has realized the importance of civic engagement.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cClosed mouths don\u2019t get fed,\u201d she wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=122113493648828399&amp;id=61574851991418&amp;_rdr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook post,<\/a> referencing that those who do not vote will not get what they want out of the municipal government.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Daniels declined an interview with The Brown and White, citing a busy schedule.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Hillary Kwiatek\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Hillary Kwiatek, a marketing and communications director at Lehigh University, is running for reelection as a Democratic candidate after being elected to City Council in 2022.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kwiatek serves as chair of the Parks and Recreation Committee, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lehighvalleylive.com\/elections\/2025\/10\/what-to-know-about-bethlehem-city-council-candidates-ahead-of-nov-4-election-armchair-lehigh-valley.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lehigh Valley Live<\/a>. She\u2019s also a liaison to the Redevelopment Authority, the Blighted Property Review Committee and the Bethlehem Housing Authority.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kwiatek has been a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lehighvalleylive.com\/elections\/2025\/10\/what-to-know-about-bethlehem-city-council-candidates-ahead-of-nov-4-election-armchair-lehigh-valley.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bethlehem Democratic Committee since 2005<\/a>. She earned her bachelor\u2019s degree in American history from Queens College, City University of New York, and her master\u2019s in folk studies from Western Kentucky University.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Kwiatek declined an interview with The Brown and White due to her role as a Lehigh employee and current City Council member.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Rachel Leon\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Rachel Leon, who is seeking reelection as a Democratic candidate, is the chair of the Public Safety Committee and serves on the Human Resources and Environment Committee, according to the City of Bethlehem\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bethlehem-pa.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">She\u2019s also a member of the Parks and Recreation Committee and serves as the Library Board liaison.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/thebrownandwhite.com\/2021\/03\/13\/meet-bethlehem-city-councils-newest-candidates\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> with The Brown and White, Leon said she\u2019s passionate about ensuring residents\u2019 voices are heard across all parts of the city.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Leon didn\u2019t respond to The Brown and White\u2019s request for an interview for this election.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Joe Poplawski\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Joe Poplawski,\u00a0 the only Republican candidate in the race, has lived in Bethlehem for 50 years and is running for City Council for the first time.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Poplawski said he was inspired to run after returning to his favorite fishing spot on the Lehigh River and finding <a href=\"https:\/\/thebrownandwhite.com\/2025\/09\/08\/encampment-relocation-prompts-organizations-to-act\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the homeless encampment<\/a> located under the Hill-to-Hill bridge had been ordered to be removed.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Poplawski said it was hard to see people who were cold without roofs over their heads not knowing where their next meal would come from.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He said he is running for City Council because of his desire to help Bethlehem, the place he has always called home.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As a construction manager, Poplawski said his experience in infrastructure gives him insight into maintaining the city\u2019s roads and bridges.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Poplawski said he is not concentrating on anything related to political parties.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI\u2019m not focused on Democrat talking points,\u201d Poplawski said. \u201cI\u2019m not focused on Republican talking points, I\u2019m focused on the issues we have in Bethlehem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He said unaffordable housing is the city\u2019s most pressing issue and proposed smaller housing units as a potential solution to reduce costs.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Polling places are open throughout Northampton County on Tuesday. Designated polling locations can be found on the county election <a href=\"https:\/\/gis.northamptoncounty.org\/pollingplaceviewer\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a> or by contacting the election office directly.
