Amid a period of substantial financial struggle, Bensalem Township School District unveiled its new Residency Task Force<\/a>, which aims to curb ineligible enrollments.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The program intends to strengthen registration verification processes and review residency concerns, ensuring that district educational resources go towards eligible resident students.<\/p>\n

Ineligible enrollments are defined as students whose permanent residence is not within the Bensalem district boundaries.<\/p>\n

Interim Superintendent Victoria Velazquez said that with recent \u201csignificant financial challenges\u201d every resource matters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In April 2026, Bensalem stared down a $16 million budget deficit<\/a>, resulting in the elimination of 31 positions \u2014\u00a0including over 20 elementary teachers, librarians, guidance counselors and special education teachers \u2014\u00a0later the same month<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

These layoffs reduced the district\u2019s deficit to $2 million.<\/p>\n

While the majority of families follow residency requirements \u2014 according to a press release from Bensalem \u2014 the district believes a small number of ineligible enrollments could have a \u201cmeaningful financial impact.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that it\u2019s really important that districts are very transparent about what their challenges may be, but we also have an obligation to our communities and our taxpayers to be responsible stewards of public resources,\u201d Velazquez said. \u201cBut at the end, never, ever losing sight of why we\u2019re all here and that\u2019s our students.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Residency Task Force is a multidepartmental effort, with Bensalem district staff from registration and enrollment, as well as student services running the program.<\/p>\n

There are also multiple administrators involved to ensure all residency reviews are objective, consistent and aligned with both district<\/a> and Pennsylvania laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Velazquez said the district will be working with community partners \u2014 at this time she did not specify with whom \u2014\u00a0 as well to help families in need as situations arise. Additionally, Bensalem has social workers on staff that can further assist those in need.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll seek out other resources to help families if they\u2019re involved in situations that may go beyond just where they are living or not living at that point in time,\u201d Velazquez said.<\/p>\n

Bensalem is requesting community assistance to help identify possible violations. The district\u2019s flyer<\/a> promoting the new task force asks residents to \u201ckeep our schools strong\u201d by reporting residency concerns.<\/p>\n

Anyone \u2014 including residents, staff members and families \u2014 who has \u201ccredible information\u201d about potential residency violations should email the district\u2019s tip line: residencytip(at)bensalemsd.org.<\/p>\n

All reports will be reviewed by the task force under district policies<\/a> and state residency laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n
