SCRANTON \u2014 Voters trickled into Scranton High School on Tuesday morning to cast ballots in highly publicized races, including a special election for Lackawanna County commissioner.<\/p>\n
Joe Garvey, a judge of elections, said he was disappointed with the Election Day turnout so far. He hoped it would pick up later, especially because many people had the day off from work and because the weather was clear and warm.<\/p>\n
As of 9:25 a.m., only 48 people from Ward 10, Precinct 2, which Garvey oversees, had voted in person.<\/p>\n
Garvey, who has held his position for four years, said that is low even when compared with other municipal elections, especially considering Scranton\u2019s mayoral race is on the ballot.<\/p>\n
Rhonda Fallk came out early to vote for Mayor Paige Gebhardt Cognetti, who she said is doing a great job keeping the streets safer and supporting the economy.<\/p>\n
But, Fallk said, no matter who is running, she comes out to vote at every election.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are part of it. It\u2019s your duty and responsibility.\u201d she said. \u201cIf you don\u2019t vote, don\u2019t complain later.\u201d<\/p>\n
Garvey said he views elections as exciting and an essential element of democracy.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re voting for someone who, if elected, will represent your views,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Voters should work to understand candidates and vote accordingly.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need an educated, free, independent electorate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
